Fear The Walking Dead | Season 4, Episode 5 Recap – “Laura”

Rob Cesternino & Jessica Liese recap “Buried”, Season 4, Episode 4 recap of “Fear The Walking Dead”

  • TrentC

Should mention this before I forget. The opening credits remind me of another show. Z Nation crossed with a little Into the Badlands.

  • Charles Bikle

very sorry to hear about Dominic Malpiedi; seemed like a really nice & decent guy and I always enjoyed his postings.

    • TrentC

Yes condolences to the friends and family of Dominic, very sad news. I didn’t know or interact with him. Certainly remember hearing his name associated with good observations and questions for various shows.

I know it’s not proper form to bring up a comparison, but I suddenly lost someone close to me a year ago this week. This person helped me remember that kindness and a certain type of respect should be present each time when exchanging ideas with friends or strangers.

I had a bunch of nonsense to ask about the episode and they’re not important. Maybe it’s fitting we saw a beautiful episode about love during a difficult time.

      • Andiamo

I was kind of glad to see I was wrong and that John Dorie was just a lovely guy. Hope you’re doing alright this week.

        • TrentC

Yeah John Dorie seems to be that one in a million person who reaffirms your faith in people during crappy times.

I’m doing alright thanks. Especially when I see your name and a few others who post at Rob’s sites. I hope things are well in your world too.

  • Petrodude

Episode 4 did we really need a whole episode on John Dory and Laura… not really in my opinion.. I mean not seeing much of Morgan for all the hoopla that it got okay I guess want advantages now I know John Dory better and I’ll remember his name just because he said it’s after the fish

    • Adam Bradford

We didn’t need it, but most episodes we probably don’t really need; at least this episode was interesting and intriguing. The thing missing for me was what Jessica said, there was no real hook. I wish they would have ended the episode showing us something that tells us she is alive because I bet she is still alive. I could see the stadium going down just like Herschel’s Farm or the Prison or the Plantation or pretty much every “battle” in the Walking Dead universe where everything goes to shit and is utterly chaotic and you don’t know who made it out alive, but it’s often incorrectly assumed that if you couldn’t find someone right away they are dead.

      • Petrodude

They won’t say what happend to her ….yet as a means of keeping the audience coming back which I understand but would like to see more on morgan or maybe more about vultures and how Charlie got with group..i do like Dory… but I think they may set us up for shocker death of dory sometime soon as he is too good for walker world

      • Andiamo

I think she’s alive too, and I could see it happening the way you said. It’s possible they were to meet at a rendezvous point after getting out, and Naomi just took off instead, so they assumed she was dead.

We didn’t get much new info this episode, but we know she lost a child, and we saw yet another example of her running away.

      • TrentC

I think she’s alive as well. For me, the purpose of this episode was to confirm that John really is a good dude and didn’t kidnap anyone, then make up a Texas Chainsaw love story. Naomi dropped a line about losing her child, but it also served to show she’s not just a chick who steals people’s cars right after they help her. That’s twice now Naomi, I’m keeping track and looking right at you!

Being the amateur script writer that I am (not), this seemed like a bridge episode to cement the realism that John has about his relationship with Naomi, and more importantly to allow Naomi to become more important to us.

Again the jaded part of me says no way they would hire Jenna Elfman for a two episode cameo and some associated flashbacks. They could have hired any C-list actress if that was the case.

    • Charles Bikle

Scott Gimple loves to drag this shit out in a manner that most annoys viewers.

This whole episode could just as easily have been trimmed down and included as a flashback in an episode that actually advanced the story.

I blame the Lost showrunners for introducing flashbacks as story padding.

      • TrentC

I can’t believe how they’re handling Madison’s story this season. What is it now… two, three episodes in real time without even a mention of her name?

        Is this Survivor??

        • Charles Bikle

It’ll only make sense, if we find out that Alicia & Co are INTENTIONALLY not referencing Madison because she’s still alive and Al, Morgan & John are being led into a trap. Maybe Madison & the stadium-crowd murdered the Vultures ? Could be an “unreliable narrator” deal going on here. Maybe ?

          • TrentC

That would actually be a pretty interesting turn in the plot lol!

We may have to start calling you Charles NonGimple.

          • Matthew Murphy

I mean the Clark family are already effective villains. Might as well steer into the curve.

          • Charles Bikle

Thinking back on the last 4 seasons, I think that the Clark family has always gone well out of their way to cooperate with the “Head Honcho” of that season, who always turns out to be crazy/evil/unreasonable and pushes the Clarks well over the line, until they have to push back. I’ve never really seen them as villains and it’s not like they’ve ever fucked up a good thing, like the Governor did when he was going through his “Brian Heriot” phase. Also, the REAL Brian Heriot should show up on FTWD.

  • DT73

The reason Laura left was because on the next movie night John was going to show “Night of The Living Dead” and she thought that would be in poor taste.

    • TrentC

      lol!

      • DT73

Yes, the store did not have a copy of the boxed set of “Dharma and Greg” Its tragic.

        • TrentC

I used to go to a little Mom & Pop vid store and they had a hand-written sign out routine. The clerk would have to write the video names into a binder.

Embarrassed the hell out of me every time I rented porn.

          • DT73

Yes, back in the VHS rental store days. The shop I went to had the porn stuff in a separate curtained-off room. Nevertheless, I had to bring my selections to rent up to this smokin’ hot teenage girl behind the counter.

          • TrentC

The creaky saloon style doors…ahhh I remember the forbidden zone well in my store.

umm, because I heard other people going in there all of the time.

  • Charles Bikle

    FIRE SCOTT GIMPLE !

    • Matthew Murphy

He’s awful, especially as a Talking Dead guest. It’s like having a lawyer on the show.

      • Charles Bikle

At this point, Talking Dead really only works if you have guests that are either funny and/or candid. Gimple is neither.

  • Andiamo

Hey Jessica, I haven’t played Words With Friends in a while, but do you play Boggle With Friends? Love that game.

I have the same user name if anyone else feels like getting crushed…I mean playing a friendly game of Boggle 😉

    • TrentC

Boggle With Friends is on Facebook? Phone app?? I haven’t been on FB since 2015 and my phone is an earPhone, not an iPhone 🙂

      damn, I’m John Dorie II

      • Andiamo

It’s an app I think you can play on iPhone/iPad or Android phone/tablet. I don’t think you can play on computer. Definitely not on your princess rotary phone (I see you, Trent.)

I thought I was bad not being on social media at all…but you’d be the winner in the apocalypse. Get a smart phone so you can play me a game, dammit.

        • TrentC

Now you’re getting creepy. I did have one of those colonial looking rotary phones, not sure if it was called a princess model. White with gold trim.

I think I have three or four devices to get on the net, alas none of them are Apple products. I do have a smartphone silly…it’s Android. I may have shut down any data-using apps because a while back I was feeling a little Luddite and wondered what I could do without. I’ve never joined Twitter for the same reason.

Don’t get me wrong, I love tech just not some of the directions it’s gone. Okay TMI..

Yes most of my net interactions are through the PC, so you will never have the pleasure of getting schooled at a word game. If you ever want to play Call of Duty however, my online nick is Sgt. Gandhi.

          • TrentC
          • Andiamo

I was thinking of those 60’s/70’s era princess phones. That looks like something you stole off an actual princess. I have to get my binoculars checked…

          • TrentC

That’s a pic from Pinterest but it was the same model. I did used to curl my hair with my fingers while chatting on it. Don’t judge me.

          • Andiamo

Two words…Wi Fi. But it’s cool, you’re scared, I get it. I probably haven’t played a video game since OG Super Mario, so you won’t have the chance to shoot me in the back or whatever happens on Call of Duty. I like your name though.

          • TrentC

Thanks. Gandhi is a bit of a personal hero of mine so the war time moniker creates some fun irony. I did have someone ‘inform’ me online about his life and how I was a terrible person for using his name. Keep in mind we’re all playing a game about shooting each other. I haven’t played anything online for many moons.

Two other words, sister and brother. They both teased me via email just this week about not using my phone to go on the net. My response?

“Oh yes I can hardly wait to use a 3 inch browser googling stuff, watching vids on a 4 inch screen, and typing on a keyboard that elves can use for emails. Takes me right back to 2001 with 56k modems and AOL. You guys are like Mary Ellen and John Boy Walton. Holy technical regression you phone neanderthals.”

            No response yet from either…hmmm.

I may just be the John Dorie of Post Show recaps. Time to get some lake water.

  • Matthew Murphy

I was a lot higher on this episode than you guys. You said we didn’t really learn anything in this flashback but we learned that Naomi lost a child and actually cared about John. So now her death, if she actually died will mean more, if we see it on screen.
I hope they retcon the walkers just walking off the bridge into a method for The Vultures to smoke John out of his place. Looked like it had some useful supplies.
This was probably my favourite or second day favourite episode. But then again I’m a sucker for any episode with minimal Clark family involvement. Hope the show is heading for a soft reboot with an almost entirely new cast aside from Strand and maybe Salazar.
Also big ups to John Dorie’s for having one of the smarter shelters. The river with the moat seemed super effective even against plot walkers.
Even when I disagree, stilll love the podcasts and they really improve the experience.

    • Matthew Murphy

Also was surprised we didn’t get the episode title in Russell Hantz voice.

    • TrentC

      I liked it as well.

  • Megan

I skipped this episode. I don’t really care for the all-flashback episodes, but I’m looking forward to hearing Rob and Jess’s thought on the episode!
