Josh, you really have to stop triggering me by calling this the best episode ever. If you truly think that is the case, then so be it, but I don’t really think that you are the kind of viewer that believes mindless action scenes are the pinnacle of GoT.

    • Derek_Sye

I just read the THR episode rankings, and I am honestly a little sad when I see it laid out this way. So many of the top episodes are based around bloody spectacles. I wonder how GRRM feels about having his anti-war narrative being celebrated for the violence he abhors.

      • susan appleby

Look at it this way: the “bad guys” lost for now after years of unhampered success. Without the battles, the “bad guys” – slavers and the psychopaths – would still be in charge.

        • Derek_Sye

I don’t think you understood what I was saying. :-(

          • susan appleby

Sorry. I am interested in your point. It’s a good one. Maybe after the night kings and the wights invade we will see this all as pointless?

Which episodes would you say are better representations of anti-war sentiment?

My point was that part of the excitement behind the show is that the “good guys” finally win and no character the viewers are strongly invested in died. Losing Ramsey is a huge positive for me because he was such a horrible character to have to watch and he has been a burden on the show for several seasons. I hated that character. There was no way to get rid of Ramsey or the slavers without violence. Even then, it took Danys Dragons to defeat the slavers. The evil people on this show are vicious.

    • Austin

While I think that there were better episodes than this one, I can completely understand why it is in the discussion. The episode had so much build up and hype and not only managed to deliver, but arguably exceeded expectations. Plenty of plot happened like the starks taking Winterfell, the Greyjoys teaming up with Dany, Littlefinger teaming up with the Starks, oh and one of the biggest villains getting killed off.

The reason that these big battles are so well setup by the plot of the show. These are the episodes that many of the other episodes are setting up and are the climaxes of their seasons. Typically writers want the climax to be the best part of their work. I think these episodes are more celebrated for their delivery of a long awaited event, as opposed to mindless action.

    • The battle scene was exhausting and not it a good way.
I prefer Tyrion jabs over any battle scene.
Red wedding was as will stay the best scene of got. Because of the drama, not because of the blood.
Battle of the bastards didn’t hit me on the emotional level.

  • I laughed way too much at that Tammy Leitner joke

  • kane

all of this could’ve been avoided as the umbers have joined the Boltons because they thought the starks had no chance if they showed up with a huge vale army almost the entire north will join them and Ramsey will have way less men .the siege the umbers and the karstarks becoming loyal to the starks Sansa could’ve used all of that to negotiate with Ramsey tell him to bend the knee and forsake their marriage release Rickon and he will get to keep his name as lord of the Dreadfort refuse and we will storm the castle with the giant and the vale army capture you and end house Bolton forever easy as a cake but she chose instead to keep it secret get her little brother killed and almost get Jon killed along with thousands of people hope Sansa learns from this because her stupidity annoys me… a great feedback show once again. in terms of battle I would put this episode at 3rd behind the rains of castamere and hardhome (everyone forgot how people went crazy after that episode last year its still one of the best )

    • susan appleby

Sansa gets way too much blame. How could she know Littlefingervwas coming for sure?

      • kane

she showed up with him .. I’m pretty sure Sansa knows that littlefinger will do anything to make up for his mistakes and I’m pretty sure she knows he has some kind of weird felling towards her and he already offered the vale army once and seemed to be willing to do it . she should know that he’s coming unless she’s dumper than I thought

        • susan appleby

He’s the most unpredictable person in te show. I wouldn’t count on him or trust him to do anything he says. She knows that better than anyone after watching his treatment and murder of Lysa Aaron.

  • susan appleby

I heard on another podcast that blaming Sansa here is like blaming Aragorn for the Battle of Pelanor Fields for not telling everyone he was going to bring in the Army of the Dead.
Neither one could be certain the army would show up.

  • susan appleby

I’m the only one who ships Sansa and Littlefinger. They could rule the world together. But more importantly Littlefinger is the only one who can keep her safe, after herself.

    • TrentC

He was also obsessed with her Mom Catelyn. I think his feelings for her are two pronged…for the potential power as well as the lust factor.

      • Asher Forrester

Littlefinger is definitely obsessed with Sansa cos of Catelyn, no questions there….but I’m not sure Sansa will ever feel anything for him except maybe gratitude. Plus when Sansa finds out Littlefinger was the cause of all this misery happening to her family cos of his obsession with her mother….there will be hell to pay! Even if they do form an alliance of sorts through marriage – this relationship will kind of be doomed from the beginning….right?

        • TrentC

I agree. She will likely realize at one point how he was behind a lot of the horrible things that have happened.

Ideal ending for him, they marry and at one point Sansa takes him out.

          • Asher Forrester

Man….you are on a roll with these theories….Love this too!!

So they marry, and take over the Seven Kingdoms….she finds out about his betrayal….kills him secretly in bed….blames it on his high-blood pressure….and eventually sits on the Iron Throne as Queen of Westeros!!

I’m all in on this theory too~~~

          • TrentC

I was thinking the exact same scenario. They wed and he trusts her enough to reveal some of his plots, then she secretly kills him.

In my GoT world, it’s all women near the End. Dany, Asha, Arya and Sansa all become dominant characters with most of the male leads getting toasted by the end.

You know how this show goes with theories though…you make one and the exact opposite happens lol!

          • Asher Forrester

That’s why the White Walkers will never Win, cos we have yet to see a female White Walker, right? Sexist A-holes like that will never rule the world of GoT! LOL

I wonder if GRRM have explained why there’s no female White Walkers….or is this a show only thing??

          • TrentC

Maybe because most of the original fighters when human were dudes? Sexist or not, people like Brienne and Arya are still considered unusual in that world. Theon’s sister Asha is in that category and I suspect she’s going to get clipped at one point.

I guess for the most part the White Walkers are guys from The Wall (all dudes club) and Wildlings. Although you’d think with the Wildlings there would be more females. Could be there are a lot of female White Walkers yet they’re so progressive they don’t have to identify by gender?

          • Asher Forrester

The original White Walker (The Night’s King) was created by The Children – who was a guy…..and the others if I’m not mistaken were created from Craster’s baby boys by the Night’s King. Remember when Gilly gave birth to little Sam? He was suppose to be sent to the White Walkers? And Gilly’s family were all females that were left behind cos the White Walkers only wanted the baby boys? Yeah…I hope it’s not because they are sexist…but that kind of seals the deal for me don’t you think? LOL Feels like the White walkers are ALL MEN….and if that is the case….it’s not a good look for them in my opinion.. Haha!!

AND, if this is the case in the books as well…..I hope GRRM has provided an explanation for it, as I am a Show only viewer….maybe I’ll start reading the books once the show ends….that might take the sadness away a bit…LOL

          • TrentC

Yes but surely all of the White Walkers can’t be just Craster’s boys. There are literally thousands of them aren’t there?

They look like men but then we have to consider their numbers and how they’ve grown over the centuries….who was the fodder so to speak when they created new ones? Otherwise it’s White Walkers = largest frozen sausage party ever!

          • Asher Forrester

LOL….A Huge Frozen Sausage Fest!! xDD

As far as I can tell there is some sort of hierarchy amongst the White Walkers. The Top Dog obviously is The Night’s King….and it looks like there are probably a dozen more beneath him…..and then comes the rest I guess – there’s probably some females there….but not too sure it looks like there’s any at the Top yet.

Although, even if there are a few females among them….the fact that they only requested boy Craster’s babies makes them pretty sexist in my eyes….LOL….but who knows they might have had a reason for requesting boys at that moment….only time will tell, I guess….>_<

I've also read somewhere that White Walkers are actually inhuman – more like demonic creatures possessing or occupying a human body….so they may be genderless even….however they do have a choice in the genders they occupy as a vessel….and they clearly favor the male species more….so it kinda still doesn't make them look good…LOL…Unless I witness a Night's Queen appear sometime soon…it's gonna be hard for me to root for them in any way shape or form…=D

          • susan appleby

I kind of hope the white walkers destroy everything and win. The people on this show are awful and don’t actually deserve to win.

          • Asher Forrester

I was rooting for the White Walkers too before I discovered there’s no females among their ranks, unless we haven’t seen them yet….if that’s the case (which I hope it is) then I will be back on board with them destroying everything and taking over as new rulers of Westeros!! >_<

          • susan appleby

Only Dany has an army. Maybe Asha has a small force.

          • TrentC

Thinking about moving towards the future. Dany gave Asha a look of appraisal and confirmation when they met. And I think they said currently Asha has 100 ships. Good start especially if Dany gives her some bodies.

          • susan appleby

Sansa is his only weak point. I don’t know how she will find out the things he’s done. Who would tell her?

          • TrentC

He may tell her during the pillow talk if he somehow feels close enough (?) She may be his one form of kryptonite where he finally lets down his guard.

        • susan appleby

I don’t think it’s just Catelyn. He has seen Sansa negotiate her way through the difficult world of Kings Landing.

      • susan appleby

True but I think Littlefinger is more complex than that- even in the show. He’s already ruined most of the high houses with his plots, not just Jon Aryn and Ned Stark- he wasn’t the only one responsible (I don’t think he was behind the Red Wedding) but also the Lannisters and Tyrell’s with the death of Joffrey and his positioning of Olyvar and Lancel for use by the High Sparrow.

I’m fascinated by him and I want to know what he ultimately wants.

        • TrentC

I wonder if his new end game is simply being married to Sansa if/when she becomes queen of the north? All of his plotting over the years has to settle on some kind of destination at one point.

          • susan appleby

I think he kind of wants to destroy everything. I think he likes the game more than the power.
I hope at some point he meets Dany.

          • TrentC

Yes, in terms of the women’s lib movement in that world….Dany takes burning her bra to whole new levels.

  • susan appleby

Great podcast guys!! Thanks for mentioning my comment about Rickon.

Rob didn’t mention that the podcast awards are live on their website this Sunday at 8.( I guess there is no meeting and ceremony this year.)
    http://www.podcastawards.com

I hope Rob updates us as to the results.

  • Buck Hondo

I suspect Sam and Gilly will still make it to Oldtown. Sam has to go there to read some ancient tome to discover the key to defeating the Night King and the Whitewalkers. Then they’ll return to the the North, armed with the knowledge they need to win. That’s my theory.

  • susan appleby

    Last episode prediction:
Arya gets revenge on the Freys via her knowledge of poison. Not sure if she gets to Winterfell. This is based on the scene in the trailer showing the deliberate references to the Red Wedding.
Jaimie and Cersei never see each other alive again.. Or only meet again at the dying moment of one of them.

Good prediction by Rob on Dorne.

    • TrentC

I’m thinking that Arya has to play a key role in the whole series after her 1.8 season training mission. She may kill off one of the most pivotal characters as we near the end of the show.

Your Jaime and Cersei prediction would be fitting. If you think about it, the very first incident when they were boinking at Winterfell and Bran saw them, then Jaimie pushed him from the tower…that event set off everything that happened in the world of GoT.

      • Asher Forrester

I think I said this in a previous podcast too….that maybe the mission for Arya to kill the actress who plays Cersei in the play is also foreshadowing Cersei’s potential demise in the hands of Arya!!?? Not sure if it will happen this finale….but hopefully towards the series finale…maybe….??

There’s so many people I want Arya to kill at this point, I’d be satisfied with whoever she ends up killing…xDD….even the Meryn Trant death last season was extremely satisfying!! LOL

        • TrentC

I can’t recall if Jaime was on her original kill list. I’m suspecting the same thing. Arya will clip Cersei, Jaime or both.

          • Asher Forrester

My hope is for Cersei getting killed by Arya….and the final confrontation being Bran and Jaime, where Bran gets to exact vengeance on the Man that pushed him to his potential death….maybe he doesn’t need to kill Jaime…but at least make him suffer the consequences of his actions! >_<

          • He will warg into Jaime and make him put a sword through Cercei’s belly.

          • Asher Forrester

I feel like if that happens it’s gonna be more fan-service than anything else…..it is possible for it to happen on the TV Show…given what happened in the last episode…but I don’t feel like GRRM is going to go down that path – it might be something even more devastating that no one saw coming…..who knows….we might not even get a Jaime and Bran confrontation! Everything just seems too good to be true at the moment….that’s why I doubt we’d be getting what we want, especially with GRRM. The Show however…..with all the fan-service this season…Jaime could be Cercei’s demise!! I don’t think that’s what we’ll get in the books though……

          • But one thing might probably happen: Brienne will kill Jaime.
Now as a fan service wtiting, I want to see arya teaming up with the hound one more time.

          • Asher Forrester

For Brienne to kill Jaime will have to be in a very sticky situation, especially after Jaime clearly let her go and spared her life while she & Pod rowed away~~ I can’t come up with a scenario where that happens…but I’m no GRRM either….so….haha…maybe that’s exactly what will happen….XDD….it will for sure be a shocking moment!

I’m totally on board with Arya & The Hound – it’s gotta happen soon, right? Or Arya with Brienne would be cool too…..OR Even better Arya, Brienne & The Hound teaming up at some point….LOL….too much?? xDD (I’d die in ecstasy if that happens…..>____<)

I wonder if Brienne & Bran would encounter each other at some point….if that happens, Bran could warg into Brienne and kill Jaime that way….and all our theories would come to fruition in one swoop….haha…too good to be true?? xD

          • ;D
If we add Jon and Hodor to the troop, it will become GOT.G where the Hound is Drax, Arya is Gamora, Bran is Rocket, Hodor is Groot and Jon is Star Lord

          • TrentC

Bran could quick-warg into Brienne, Jaime, The Hound, Hodor and create a really weird puppet show of violence.

          • Asher Forrester

If he’s able to warg into more than one person at the same time….then he should warg into all the White Walkers and have them destroy each other….OR better yet…..use them as his warg army to destroy anyone that dares stands in his way to the Iron Throne!! xD

          • TrentC

            Warg into a dragon…

ooooh, I’m having a moment here to myself, give me a sec…ooohhhh

          • Asher Forrester

Oh YES!! That is definitely happening….not sure when….but it’s happening….no doubts about it! The only question is how and when it will happen….and what happens when he does….

          • TrentC

He’ll wait until Dany is on the dragon’s back, about 500 feet up…then he’ll do a barrel roll and she’ll get a new name. The Queen of House SPLAT.

          • TrentC

            Yikes, nasty!

            *two thumbs up*

  • Asher Forrester

I don’t feel like there’s enough time to visit Dorne in the Finale….Dorne’s probably my pick for the one storyline we’re not gonna see this finale…..The premiere episode was possibly just setting them up for the next Season Premiere….or later down the line they’ll just pop up in one of the battles when needed~~

Really pumped up for the Throners….especially the Excellence in Hodor Award…that’s gonna be a tough category to vote for….really excited to find out who will end up getting the honor……I mean Hodor!!!! >_______<

I'm willing to bet that the extended final scene at the end will be about Bran and the White Walkers – It's gonna be one HUGE Reveal and Shocker…..and the entire Series will be left in a GIANT Cliffhanger – I think the whole episode will be cliffhangers for every storyline…..I really can't see them resolving anything heading into the Final 13 episodes – we're just gonna come out of it with even more questions and frustrations!! (It will be kind of like what they did with the Season 2 Finale "Valar Morghulis" where they also had an extended finale and ended with the White Walker Army marching towards the Wall…)

AND Finally…..I seriously cannot believe that this is it guys……we are heading towards the end…..after the finale…..it's possible that there's only going to be 13 episodes left of GoT the TV Series……and we'd probably have to wait another year or even more for the next season…..we're Never gonna encounter a bigger finale like this ever again UNTIL the SERIES FINALE….and god knows how long that will be….gotta appreciate and soak this all in while we can guys…..before we know it this will be all over…..GoT will be all over…..and what are we gonna do then????? LOL…..I'd probably just cry myself to sleep~~~~ xDDDD

    • TrentC

Think of the rewatch though. Seven seasons of some of the best TV ever made. I’ve only watched each episode once as it aired over the past few years. The massive binge rewatch will be spectacular.

      • Asher Forrester

Yeah….I do look forward to binging the entire series one day from start to finish….however, I’m also dreading it at the same time….cos when that does happen it will mean the series have ended….and there will be no more new GoT episodes to look forward to!!! T^T

Maybe it is a good thing GRRM is taking his time finishing the books….cos that would also mean the end of the Book Series too…which would suck yet also exciting at the same time, cos we will finally know the ending to this incredible series..even though people are suffering cos of the long wait in between books!! LOL

        • TrentC

You gotta wonder how influential Martin will be in the last episodes of the series. He’s supposed to write at least one more book and they mentioned that he helped with the Hodor progression on TV.

And yes the final episode will be a sad day indeed.

      • I’ve watched each season at least 5 tilmes.

        • TrentC

I’ve only watched them as they aired. Started reading the books and am 2.2 books in at this point. Watching the show first before reading the books is a little backwards for me. I do like it as it helps to visualize where they are. I read all of Tyrion’s parts in the actor’s voice.

          • I’m also 2.2 into the books. And I prefer watching the show before reading the books, as I usually end up enjoying both media.
The other way around doesn’t work for me.

    • susan appleby

I think Dorne will be visited at least briefly. There needs to be setup for other houses to take center stage. I think at least two people are headed to Dorne.

  • TrentC

A mention of both Hodor and Wun Wun getting killed in the same season. What’s the rule? If we don’t see the character die onscreen it didn’t happen.

Last I saw Hodor, he was holding the door…

    regards,
    Ser Glass Half Full

    • Asher Forrester

That is very true!!! Fingers crossed you are right~~~ However we also never got to see Stannis die on screen or even the Blackfish…..and according to Brienne Stannis is dead…..and the director have confirmed the Blackfish is also dead…..not quite sure if we can trust the people working on the show anymore…so who knows….hopefully for Hodor, anything is possible!!!

      • TrentC

        sshhh about Stannis!

I’m hoping that since Benjen has been such an enigma, that somehow Hodor will be alive and continue helping Bran.

Even if he is a creepy frozen Hodor-sicle :(

        • Asher Forrester

And since Hodor is half-giant….he must have some sort of power right? If Benjen survived why not Hodor?? I love the way you think!!! I’m totally on board with this theory!!!! <3

          • TrentC

How about this. The White Walkers turn Hodor into a bad guy and then Bran wargs into him, uses Hodor like an assassin from within the ranks.

          • Asher Forrester

So you’re telling me that Hodor is now a White Walker marching towards the Wall with the Night’s King??? Damn….where do I sign up for this theory!! This has to happen~~

      • Nathaniel Turner DuBois

We saw Ned’s head on a stick, but we never saw him die …

        • Asher Forrester

Technically his beheading did happen on-screen per se…..we just didn’t see the whole gruesome horror of it all cos of the way the camera angle was shot, which kind of makes sense….who wants to see that anyways…..haha

  • TrentC

Okay so what’s up with Ghost ghosting Jon? One of two things…since Jon came back from the dead it seems the wolf wants nothing to do with him…or Ghost is off doing something incredible on his own. Perhaps locating Bran?

    • Asher Forrester

I’ve always saw Ghost as his own character on the show….kind of a rebel that does his own thing….even when Jon was in Castle Black, he’d always go off on his own somewhere….not even Jon knows where he disappears to – hence, maybe the name Ghost?!? LOL

      • TrentC

I hate doing this. Just read that the director cut him because of special effects budgetary concerns. It was either Wun Wun or Ghost…damn those money lenders!!

        • Asher Forrester

Yeah….that’s why I’d like to think he’s now off on his own somewhere searching for Nymeria, since every other one of his siblings have passed……so sad!!!

          • TrentC

He picked up the scent of a female direwolf and is pursuing! Him and the Ho-wolf have a litter and start the cycle anew :)

          • Asher Forrester

I always thought of the Direwolves as an extinct species, and that the Starks have the last of the ones left, kind of like the Giants…but I do hope I’m wrong…and Ghost has found another to carry on the Direwolf bloodline, as you said!!!

    • GeekFurious

In the script, Ghost was chopping people to tiny pieces at the most recent battle. But time and money made him stay behind and hunt rabbits.

      • TrentC

Thanks, just read a snippet talking about production costs as the reasoning behind Ghost not appearing in the past episode.

Yes he was hunting wabbits and/or protecting Sansa at the rear..

  • GeekFurious

Of all the episode 9s, I’d rank them like this:

    1. 3.09 (like Josh, this one is untouchable to me)
    2. 1.09 (stuck at #2… I doubt will ever budge)
    3. 4.09 (so much emotion)
    4. 6.09 (action-packed but loses points for plotting)
    5. 2.09 (great drama but the action feels… wanting, by comparison to the others)
    6. 5.09 (it was an okay episode)

    • kane

hardhome ???!!! it literally broke the internet last year

      • Asher Forrester

Hardhome was episode 8. His ranking here is for all the episode 9s of each season so far….

      • GeekFurious

People consistently make this mistake… like What the Flick? did in their review this week. Season 5 broke the mold by putting their big epic episode in 8.

  • SamMuray

    Seven hells! Where’s book club?

  • Bob

Much love, Rob. Sansa is NOT the smartest. You’ve now read the books. She’s dumb as a post. Once the show diverged from the books, they quickly made her a genius and it makes no sense.
