Rob Cesternino and Rich Tackenberg recap the latest episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Jim Parsons. Join us LIVE to ask us your questions after the episode

Things that Worked (the short list):

  • Rob liked the Bird Bible sketch for Kate McKinnon, Mike O’Brien and baby Jesus hatching from an egg
  • Rich got “Tonked” by Tonk
  • Rob thought that the “12 Years a Slave” Auditions were funny
  • Both Rob and Rich are becoming smitten by Cecily Strong on Weekend Update
  • Jebediah Atkinson performed well again, after having a few months in between appearances rather than just 2 weeks.

Things that Didn’t Work (a longer list):

  • Rob thought the cold open with Ellen was a bit of a throwaway
  • Rob and Rich didn’t understand why they chose most of the TV characters that appeared in the monologue
  • Rich didn’t like the Murder Mystery sketch (though Rob was amused by the antics of Simply Dudley)
  • Rob didn’t know how the elevator sketch got on the air
  • While Rich appreciated Jay Pharoah as Shaquille O’neal, Charles Barkley is one of Keenan’s worst characters
  • Rich really hated the Cowboys birthday sketch which closed out the show.

Overall, it was a very uneven episode to start the Colin Jost era on SNL, though his performance on weekend update got better as it wen’t along.

Join us back next week when we recap the March 8th edition of Saturday Night Live hosted by Lena Dunham with musical guest, The National.

Wikipedia is saying that Fey was a featured player for her first season, then moved to the main cast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Live_(season_26)

P.S. Rich I went back and watched the woman in the goodnights and am just as puzzled as you. She doesn’t look like any celebrity we should recognize. It takes Colin a minute to recognize her and then seems happy to see her. His reaction still seems kind of muted though, otherwise I might assume he had a young-looking mother. Is he on twitter? Maybe you could get it straight from the source.

      • It’s probably somebody there to serve papers to somebody. That’s how they get you.

      • Good point. I just tweeted him. hopefully, he’s not too busy preparing for tonight.

    • Huh. Good catch. I’ve been trying to find opening credits for season 26 on Netflix, Amazon or Youtube, but so far no luck.

I really enjoyed the Dance Floor Killer, the auditions for 12 years a slave, Bird Bible, and the Weekend Update performances of Shaq and Jebediah. Thought Colin didn’t do horrible for his first time, but may need to work on his breaking during the segment and just get more familiar with the role.

  • Jason Lee

Oddly enough, the “The Next Day” card in the cowboy sketch was my favorite part of the whole episode due to the incredibly cheesy 80s infomercial music they used.

Thank you for posting the video clips! I like to listen to your recaps but am not interested in watching the entire show.
