Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Antonio Mazzaro (@acmazzaro) are joined by AJ Mass (@ajmass) and Rob Cesternino (@robcesternino), familiar and new to the series respectively, to air our ideas, hopes and even¬†concerns about the concluding season of “The Leftovers,” whenever it finally arrives.

Hey guys, i have two questions.
1- why there was not even one golden globe nomination for this show? Do u think they have a better shotwith the Emmys?
2- what are your feeling on the fact that season 3 is the last season?

    • TrentC

      2. I like it and hate it. Like because it gives the creative team the chance to finish the story properly, on their terms, without wondering if they need to continue certain storylines for a number of seasons into the future…hate it because, well, it ends.

  • Aaron Cockerill

Might we see the gang heading to Australia next season?

  • Andrew

With Lindelof having said in an interview that he’d like Scott Glenn to be a big factor on the show and a “lead off hitter” possibly in season 3, what would your guys ideal method be of re-introducing him into Kevins and his family’s life?

Would you start season 3 with a time jump, and he’s living in the same town as the Garvey family, or would you have Kevin seek him out in Australia because of the journey he went on during season 2 as a person? Especially because of the hotel experiences he had and being able to communicate with his dad via the TV. I really want to see the exploration of their relationship now that Kevin has theoretically “died” twice.

I get that with Jarden being “hell on earth” right now, it wouldn’t make sense for Kevin to leave everyone to travel to Australia on his own, but I think it’s something really interesting to think about.

    • Brendan Fitzpatrick

      Garvey Senior’s Adventures in Australia?

    • TrentC

lol, I just wrote a fan fiction idea above without reading your post. The similarity is borderline creepy, apologies.

Some good thoughts Andrew, I agree.

  • Valeri Valirian

    I have questions too:
    1. How can Wigler make crazy ass shit theories about John Snow’s resurrection, but fail to notice all the Leftovers connections to another J.S. person’s possible resurrection, the Inception-like, 88-page “Jack’s dream” theory? Dead birds, water, Joanna (Patti) drowning, Christ, smoke detector, a bold dude and Kevin fighting, DHARMA stairs, “Discover the Mysteries of Lost … Pines” book behind Virgil, the well with magnetic energy, jumping off a bridge, going “home” … if you got a feeling they “pulled a Lost” on you with “International Assassin”, that’s because you should, have that feeling. And had you cared to read the Jack’s dream theory, not the piece on darkufo, the full one, you’d know all these seemingly random references to LOST, are in fact not at all so random, but very systematic.
    2. Do you remember the smoke detector in “Something Nice Back Home”?
    3. Can you really see the “purple sky” in John Snow’s eye?
P.S. They should really throw a sequel to “The Leftovers” in the future, called “The Rightunderyournoses”.

I can’t wait for all your minds to meet and discuss this Season and what you guys think will be the end goal for the show….this is great….feels like an early xmas present for me! >_<

You guys should definitely think about doing this more often for other shows too. I love Most Shows Recap where you guys talk about the premiere of popular shows….but it would also be nice to hear your thoughts after most shows have finished…and whether or not you've changed your minds compared to the start of the show, if it got better or just got worse. (for example Jessica Jones, The Man in the High Castle or even the upcoming finale of Fargo…which I'm positive you guys are already planning something special for that….OR even a surprise Special GoT think tank/round table for the up-coming 6th Season before the year ends – that would be my xmas wish – it would for sure be the star on top of my xmas tree to finish off the year :D)

Do you guys want a time jump for the start of Season 3….or do you want it to start exactly where they left off in the finale?
Cos we still don't know what the aftermath of the last earthquake was….I think it will be exciting to see it all play out in real time….and especially with Kevin's entire family right there with him. To start off S3 only to split them up again will be devastating, right? And to follow up on the Murphy Family would be great too….I feel like there's still so much to show of them, especially with what's happened to them after the raid of their home, and how it will impact their already shattered family dynamic.

Renewed for a 3rd and Final season – Thank Gods. It will be epic. And to have a massive ThinkTank with the PSR superstars will be just as great.
Stray Thoughts, things I think I need, and ways I think Season 3 can be built in.

I personally want to explore Nora Durst’s storyline deeper, I felt she got sidelined by the last episodes and did not get closure on that.
Kevin’s arc – Which I loved, is fine now, he could take a step back while being an important piece of the puzzle in other ways. maybe Chief Garvey now ? John and Kevin try to bring order to Miracle ?
Matt could be a great part of a trio there too.
I need John, much more John, he needs to deal with a lot of shit right now. Maybe focus the season around him here ?
The Garvey’s pseudo family cannot work out, but they will figure it out, they have been through too much to lose each other now. Of course, Lori vs. Meg could be great, Lori needs something to live for and she does not have much, so things can be done there.
I need a deep dive into the scientific AND spiritual side of this, I don’t have to get answers but the Hotel, Sydney, Demon Azrael and Lenses have to be in the conversation here. I know the show is not about the grandeur, but there is many creative opportunities in those things. And of course you can be creative in many other ways not including these, but in similar ways. Maybe use the scientist character a bit.
    I repeat: Sydney.
    The man in the tower.
Tommy can get pregnant, and puke out Baby Jesus if need be, I dont really care, the character is really messy and feels out of place. I could not care less about him really..
And of course the GR, I dont really want to get much into the politics of it, but If Meg can catch some momentum things can escalate into potentially epic territory.

  • Edwin Johnson

Might we see a different main character take the journey to the International Assassin Hotel? Perhaps John.

    • Brendan Fitzpatrick

That would be fun (as much as that’s fun), for it to be a different character. But I feel like that’s now a “Kevin Thing” and he still has 2 more outfits to try on…

  • Andrew

This is going to be awesome! So hyped.

  • Edwin Johnson

Now that the Jardin of Eden has fallen with the help of snakey Meg, will Kevin become the savior figure?

  • ryan wilson

Meg is pregnant with tommys baby….whole new bunch of directions to go

    • Charles Bikle

I don’t think that would be all that promising a storyline…

  • S_Carl_Dixon

We need more Ann Dowd in our lives……she is spectacular as Patti~~ Hopefully she finds her way back for season 3!! >_<
    AND
We definitely need to know why Evie gave her dad that faux cricket for his birthday present….LOL….that one gave it's life while the real one still lurks around…..man….that poor cricket!! xDDD

  • TrentC

Kevin gets word of his father’s death and has to travel to Australia for the funeral. He encounters a town which is the opposite of Miracle/Jarden. The majority of residents have departed leaving a skeleton crew of ruined people. Some of the people left have seemingly developed psychic powers and earthquakes are prevalent in the area.

Three episodes in Australia, Kevin returns back to Texas where Meg has decided fear is no longer enough, she needs to escalate awareness. The 35 lbs of C-4 have now grown to 500 lbs and the Guilty Remnant plans on removing Jarden from the map. A person with psychic abilities finds Kevin and says that they have a message from Kevin’s Dad. The psychic uses a TV and Kevin sees a grainy image of Kevin Senior, and Dad is sitting in one of the rooms in the International Assassin hotel. He gives a vague clue as to where Meg is hiding the C-4 throughout Jarden.

Matt and Mary have their baby, Erika, John and Evie reconcile, Tommy and Laurie decide to live in Jarden after Laurie’s amicable divorce from Kevin.

And at the climax of the season, last episode, just when it appears the C-4 will go off and Meg will win…another 2% of people depart throughout the world.

Thanks for the four way podcast guys, always nice to hear more about the show.

    I think I forgot Holy Wayne’s “Deja Vu”…

Wigler, please, make a podcast. Share opinion.

  • Charles Bikle

As far as the 3rd season being the last one, right now, I’m sure that’s the plan, but I have to believe that if there’s a spike in interest in the show, that HBO will rethink things (but Lindelof may not).

  • Charles Bikle

In the show, I’m surprised that there’s been no theories about the Departed being part of a mass UFO abduction. Maybe everyone just has this “sense” that the disappearance was spiritual in nature ?

Crazy Theory #2: A global case of spontaneous combustion, where everyone burned so clean, that they (and their clothes) completely disintegrated without scorching the environment and leaving no burn marks.

    • I’ve actually thought about that, the UFO abduction. If that were the case though I think everyone would throw up their hands and banish Damon from television forever. Ha ha ha we can talk about God and science and all that, but throw aliens in as the answer and then everyone thinks your a nut (at least in the “reality” that the Leftovers lives in). Remember though, the show will not explain the answer, so speculation is futile.

      • Charles Bikle

Lindelof has pretty much said that he’s not going to explain the “departing”, but you’d think we’d hear a few people float out UFO’s or other non-religious causes.

Everyone on the show seems to believe the departing was somehow spiritual in nature.

      • Charles Bikle

It’s funny, but right now there’s another show – a gritty crime drama that is completely non sci-fi,- that has the belief in UFO’s as a background element – don’t get Antonio Mazzaro started on that one.

        • Don’t get me wrong I love a good alien show and aliens in good shows. But for this show and for Damon’s future, I think that would be the worst way to explain the departure. Just my opinion though!

        • oh and what’s the name of that show?

    • John Mckinney

I think there’s a universe where the Departed 2% wonder where the hell the 98% went.

      • Charles Bikle

That’s an interesting idea too – basically, a big dimensional shift where the universe duplicated itself, with its inhabitants being divided between the 2 universes, in a 98 %/02 % ratio.

  • Sorry I missed this live but thank you so much for this!!! So nice for all of you to weigh in, but 1 hr not long enough!!

Rob, I’d like to challenge your thought that the show is obviously leaning one way. I read an interview with Damon I think where he said “supernatural does not equal spiritual.” Though I’d really like it to be true [your theory] I have to go back to the thought that though science cannot explain it yet there’s a good chance these people may have a genetic abnormality in their DNA that allows them to read thoughts, predict future events, read palms, lol. So with that in mind, just because Issac knew about the walnuts doesn’t mean God is at work here in Leftoversland. Issac could have read Meg’s mind and she was probably thinking about her last moments with her mom.

That being said, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a God either, and he wasn’t working through Issac and his gifts to help Meg. Ha ha I think it still can be read either way. Btw, did I ever mention I work in a church?

Can’t wait until next season, thanks for all you did to help get this show renewed guys! All I can say is I hope that whatever we get for our last season, that we are left with life lessons told as gracefully and powerful as we’ve already seen. I do think that’s at the heart of Damon’s work, in Lost and in this show. I just hope more people get it this time.

Deja Vu = me writing a 80+ page theory, explaining in detail the greatest lie in TV history, while being completely ignored by all the LOST “experts”, who find it amusing to tweet about Survivor at the same time.
