The Walking Dead | Season 9 Mid-Season Premiere Recap: “Adaptation”

Rob Cesternino and Jessica Liese recap season 9, episode 9, the mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead entitled “Adaptation.”

I was so excited for this episode and I was not disappointed 😁
I like they have new ppl, sorry but the story was getting old with Rick & son, had trouble watching it continuously
Wow the whispers 😳looking good 😆🍿

  • Matthew Murphy

Rosita’s got a good head on her shoulders, I’m sure her love square will be sorted out.

    • Just Joe

I get it, very clever sir!

    • Pink Pearl

      Oh, you.

  • J-me not Hi-me

Wait wait wait, since when is Daryl such an excellent judge of character? He hooked up with the Claimers for a while and he distrusted Jesus on sight.

    • J-me not Hi-me

Oh God, unless this has something to do with the mysterious thing that happened to he and Michonne sometime during the past 6 years.

      • Pink Pearl

Seriously that ‘mysterious thing’ business needs to end now.

        “Thanks for that thing.”
        “What thing?”
“You know, that thing you did that one time.”

That is some “Fear the Walking Dead” level storyboarding right there.

        • J-me not Hi-me

I can definitely see why they’d drag a reveal out needlessly. I mean, the fan base reacted SO WELL to both Dumpster Gate and the “who did Negan kill” plots.

    • Matthew Murphy

Not sure, they’re having Daryl play a more prominent role since every important character is leaving the show.

  • OutsideLookingIn

I know Samantha Morton from Minority Report as this scene is etched in my brain.

I’m with Jess on my concern for Alpha’s accent. It was just a brief preview so I’m reserving judgment, but if it really is bad/ funny the show could be in big trouble. That being said I’m still really enjoying the show more than I have in a long time, and always look forward to these recaps!

i am so used to trashing this show that I feel a little uneasy in not finding a lot to complain about!

    1) I think the Whisperers arc has rejuvenated the series and made the walkers interesting again. In non-herd situations, the survivors have gotten so good at putting them down that it was taken for granted. Now, the prospect of some of them being humans has added an exciting dimension to it.

    2) But why shoot them in the leg to discover if they are Whisperers, why not just shoot them in the head and check for a mask afterwards?

    3) Jesus’s head appeared to be intact, so weren’t they risking him reanimating on the journey back to the Hilltop?

    4) Could a walker really catch and kill a dog, given how slow and clumsy they are? I also think that packs of feral dogs and cats would be common, given the millions of pets that would have been abandoned in the ZA.

    5) The Negan story should have a purpose. I was hoping for a Governor-like flashback (as was mentioned on the podcast) to get some of his backstory. Him wandering around, drinking contaminated water and puking, getting chased by dogs, getting shot off of his motorcycle, etc., was not adding to his character development.

    • Pink Pearl

Re #2: I wondered the same thing myself, but I think the answer might be that shooting a human in the leg draws the actual walkers away from you, whereas going for a kill shot requires you to shoot them all in the head while they’re still coming at you.

      • Bry_Lander

RIght, it is a ZA story problem. “Daryl has 6 arrows and there are 10 walkers ambling toward him. If 3 of the walkers are actually Whisperers and a wounded Whisperer attracts 3 walkers, what is the statistical probability that Daryl will have enough arrows?”

A next-level Whisperer would actually shift over and pretend to eat a wounded Whisperer along with the other walkers in order to escape detection…

  • Matthew Murphy

I didn’t think of it until Jess mentioned the leather jacket being fake but it really works for where Negan is currently. The jacket is just an imitation, a shadow of the real thing just like Negan has become. Although the whole thing was a persona that he needed to survive the ZA.
