The Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 2 Recap Podcast of JSS on October 18, 2015

Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) is back together with Rob Cesternino (@robcesternino) to recap The Walking Dead Season 6 Episode 2, JSS

They discuss the entire Wolves’ attack on Alexandria and what it means for our original group, the wolves, and the rest of the people in Alexandria.

The Wolves: Who are they? Do they have a leader? Why don’t they have/use guns? How long will they be around and when will we see them again?

Carol and Morgan:  The two from our group at the center of the defense. Which of them have the right mindset? Kill or be killed, or all life is precious?

The Others:  Is Enid with the wolves? Why did she leave? Where is she going? How will Aaron react now that he knows it was his bag that led the wolves to Alexandria? Will Deanna still be able to be a strong leader now that she has lost her son and husband?

Rob and Josh dive into all of this and your questions.

Did the Wolves just put the “W” in WTF?

  • Coach

Is it a coincidence that they didn’t need a doctor until they got a doctor?

    • Adam Bradford

Who’s to say the didn’t need a doctor before? Surely they did when Tara was knocked into a coma.

  • Emily Stobs

What did you initially think “JSS” abbreviated?

    • Coach

Initials at first…the actual answer feels like a letdown

  • Emily Stobs

Who was the real MVP this episode? Carol or Morgan?

    • Chlsea_1905

CAROL, no doubt. She knows that what she’s done is horrible but that did not stop her from protecting herself and her people. Plus these wolves are INSANE! the group will never be able to reason with them. Morgans approach will come back to bite him (hopefully not someone else, exept for Gabriel) in the ass.

      • Adam Bradford

I agree, Carol for MVP. Something tells me Morgan is going to end up getting killed by the end of the season for his passive ways; probably by the guy he let go.

  • Dave_Bakker

    Best non-Rick episode?

    • Emily Stobs

      I would say so!

    • Megan

      I think so!

  • Charles Bikle

So, is Enid one of the Wolves ?

    • Cindi Wigglesworth

She could be gone. We didn’t see her after the note!

    • Adam Bradford

Ooh! That would have been a good twist! Very delicious! (Not in the baby eating/sushi turtle way though)

      • Charles Bikle

I figured Enid was one of the Wolves or a spy for a separate community – she’s always given that “Others from LOST” vibe – a combination of overly cryptic combined with a feeling of not really being on your side.

        • Adam Bradford

I just thought she was a typical moody teenage girl lol.

  • Coach

Would you rather live in the wilderness or in a community that everyone wants to take from you?

    • Adam Bradford

When there is a threat of zombies and people like the wolves? A secure community sounds like the easy answer.

      • Coach

True, but they have only encountered people like the governor and the wolves while in communities

        • Adam Bradford

Life inside the communities is pretty close to pre-apocalyptic life though where you can sleep at night without much fear of a zombie walking up on you and you can enjoy many of the luxuries of pre-zombie life. You just have to have a good perimeter and defense to fend of any attackers, but that’s everywhere you go. We’ve seen that If you encounter people in the wilderness they’ll most likely attack you also.

  • Millie

Did Morgan make a major mistake by letting the Wolves go?

    • Adam Bradford

I don’t think it mattered either way. Surely some ran off after they saw some of their brethren being killed. However, because it’s TV and how they portrayed it, surely Morgan will be killed by the very guy he should have killed.

  • Emily Stobs

Why were the Wolves so brutal in killing the Alexandrians? They looked psychotic.

    • Adam Bradford

That’s a good question. The one guy that Morgan spoke to seemed like he was crazy, on drugs, or something to make him out of his mind.

  • Chris Edwards

Who will be more successful: Rick converting Morgan to his kill-or-be-killed philosophy or Morgan converting Rick to his all-life-is-precious philosophy?

    • Adam Bradford

I think Morgan’s philosophy will win out as Rick is our main protagonist and the fundamental “good guy” of the show.

    • Andiamo

I think they will basically maintain their own perspectives, but each will influence the other so neither will be 100% fixed and absolute in their thinking.

    • S_Carl_Dixon

They will eventually meet in the middle!! That last scene with Carol walking one way and Morgan the other is a great metaphor for this philosophy!!

    • Joseph Campbell

I think Rick will be more successful. I think the wolves that Morgan let go are going to come back and attack again. Morgan will then takes Rick’s philosophy.

  • spicywasabi

    where’s the chat room

    • Coach

Chat room is on RHAP not PSR

      • spicywasabi

PSR has always had its own chatroom

        • Coach

hmmmm, i don’t remember one…it would be nice to have it (back)

        • NatalieKuchik

Yeah, it’s always had one. At least last season it did. (and for game of thrones there was a chat)

  • Coach

With such a big herd of walkers heading back to Alexandria…why did only Morgan return?

    • Chlsea_1905

I know. He was at the same place as Rick and Michone. I guess he’s also been marathon training.

    • Millie

Didn’t Rick have Morgan head back to Alexandria before everyone else last episode? The whole attack only happened within the amount of time Carols cake was baking, they must not have had time to head back?

      • Adam Bradford

I agree, as the previews for next week shows us, it looks like Morgan headed back to stop the horn while the rest stayed behind to keep the zombie hoard from getting to Alexandria.

  • Jennifer Grasso

Did you also see way to many Lost references? Building a church (Mr Eko), the donating blood to a dying patient (Jack and Boone), the thinning of the nameless characters (remember the flaming arrows?).

    • Coach

Splitting the group into two groups and alternating episodes with them

    • Adam Bradford

Pretty sure these were less Lost references and more common TV tropes.

    • HomerBrannon1

Don’t get mad at me just because you were dumb enough to fall for the Wookie prisoner gag.

  • Jennifer Grasso

Carol should be voted leader of Alexandria, or at least Secretary of Defence.

  • Jennifer Grasso

    So Enid’s not coming back?

  • Chlsea_1905

    Loved Carol chewbaccaing Morgan.

  • Fernando Castro

So many questions left about the Wolves, but did the show pull a Terminus and effectively end the Wolves threat in one big episode? There was also a small handful that Morgan let go. Maybe he needs a visit from Cabin Douche ghost?

    • Adam Bradford

Pretty sure we’ve just gotten the tip of the iceberg with the Wolves.

    • Joseph Campbell

I think the wolves will be back. When they come back, I think Morgan will come to the realization that Rick and Carol are right, you can’t let your enemies go.

  • Legionwrex

Why is Father Gabriel constantly avoiding death when all the good characters die easily?

    • Adam Bradford

Must have someone looking out for him! 😉

  • Adam Bradford

Could the Wolves be people who were either exiled from Alexandria or those who were never accepted into the community? Rick’s gang was evaluated before being accepted into Alexandria, what if they didn’t pass the test? Could they have been branded with the “W” and banished from Alexandria? It seems very peculiar to me that at their welcoming party Rick got stamped on his hand with the letter “A”, showing his acceptance into Alexandria. If you noticed, a red “A” was highlighted again tonight right after Carol rubbed the red “W” on her forehead. Surely they have to be connected somehow.

    • S_Carl_Dixon

I think raiding random neighborhoods are just what the wolves do to survive….remember Noah’s hometown they visited last season? Everything was destroyed and everyone was killed….that was the wolves too…I think they were planning to do the same to Alexandria….they just didn’t prepare for a Carol and Morgan badass team-up….LOL

  • A.Claire

Do you think that the wolves were tipped off that Alexandria was vulnerable at that time? We can argue that people in Alexandria are weak anyway but it was still seemed convenient that they attacked at the time Rick and the others weren’t there.

    • Adam Bradford

Yeah, that would have been one heck of a coincidence. I assume they have been watching the place and saw where most of the community had left. More and likely they even had an insider, maybe Enid.

  • Andrew Garcilazo

Did you guys catch the Johnny Fairplay shout-out?!

    • No, what was it?

      • Andrew Garcilazo

It wasn’t really a shout-out but I got excited when Eugene said “that’s fair play” to the pretend doc.

    • Adam Bradford

I missed it too, did someone’s dead grandmother come back to life? And if so, was it human or zombie?

  • Andrew Garcilazo

Top five TWD episode of all time.

  • Steve Davis

It was very strange that she happened to have all of the keys on her just as this raid happens…

  • Troy

There is speculation that Enid is a wolf or working with them, but the timeline doesn’t make sense.. Enid has been at Alexandria for a while, and the wolves have supposedly just discovered the place. Also why would they have needed the backpack to help them find Alexandria if they already knew about it and had a mole inside. Enid’s story is odd and not sure why we got her backstory. Was it just a means to explain why she runs away when the goings get tough? Anyway great episode and up there as one of my favorites.

    • Adam Bradford

That would make for an interesting story line. And I think the timeline could make sense. I don’t think the Wolves just discovered Alexandria. I mean, when Rick’s crew came around they discovered that zombie with a “W” on it’s head. There’s a chance they were just waiting to attack. I’m hoping my theory of the Wolves being people who were outcast from Alexandria comes to fruition.

      • Troy

I forgot about the walkers with the W around Alexandria, though I wonder if those were put there to show how close the wolves camp was to Alexandria and not that the wolves were actually stalking.. tough to know for sure until the season plays out.

I do wonder though since Enid often left Alexandria if one time when she was out, after the wolves found Alexandria thanks to the photos, if they had caught her and threatened to kill her unless she gave up information on the residents, and that’s where the whole JSS slogan is coming from, she basically telling Carl that she did it to survive.

  • Carol channeling her inner Assassins Creed, love it. Although, that plan of hers to dress as one of the Wolves could have easily backfired if one of the Alexandrians that can actually fight like Aaron, Carl, Rosita, Maggie, etc gunned her down without a second thought. I mean in the middle of a brutal battle who is really checking for recognizable features?

    • S_Carl_Dixon

Yeah, but you forget that this is Carol you’re talking about….I don’t think any of them are a match for her….not even Morgan….even if they do try to gun her down….the bullet would probably miss her by a mile!! haha.

      • Haha, I know her casseroles give her superpowers and everything, but I still think she’s bloody lucky that worked as well as it did.

  • Rei

carol kill count: through the roof!

  • susan appleby

Is anyone tired of so many humans being so brutal and insanely violent to other humans? It’s the same story over and over. I still don’t see what they have to gain.

    • Andiamo

What I think is interesting about this group is that it they are so far gone they no longer really consider themselves people. They call themselves animals, use animal noises to communicate, and the guy Morgan caught said “we’re freeing you, you’re trapped, you need to know people don’t belong here anymore.”

This takes the central question of what level of humanity do you have to give up to survive to the ultimate point. I’m guessing that being “free” of humanity, this group is going to be the most brutal they’ve come across.

  • Tim Forbes

Are you sad that Mrs. Neidermeyer never got her pasta maker?

  • Tim Forbes

Did Spencer save everyone by shooting the truck or doom everyone by causing the horn to go off?

    • Andiamo

I’m voting saved since the truck would’ve taken the walls down. But two things about the truck; One, either the driver turned incredibly fast, or it was a walker with a weighted down pedal. And two, I get the feeling the truck is filled with walkers given the whole set up the wolves had at the canning factory. I think that whether the herd comes or not they’re going to have a mass of walkers to deal with.

  • Andiamo

Isn’t Morgan’s story line with letting the wolves go (twice) mirroring Tyrese’s story line with cabin douche a little too closely? I feel like they can’t just let that play out in the same way with the same message, even though the Wolf taking Chekhov’s gun on his way out of Alexandria does make it seem like that’s where we’re heading.

  • Andiamo

I’m wondering what anyone thought of the final scene. Carol and Morgan meet at a crossroads, Carol continues moving forward while Morgan turns left, changing directions and heading into the distance (the direction where Carol came from.) This leaves the two heading in opposite directions.

A lot has been said about the perspectives of Rick and Morgan, but this episode really set up Morgan and Carol as the polar opposites.

    • S_Carl_Dixon

I love that final scene…..seeing them both walk in opposite directions makes a great impact on the philosophies they each live by in this world….let’s hope they both start to meet up somewhere along their paths. I personally agree with both sides….and that’s why I really wish they could find a way to work together somehow….

We are starting to see both of them slowly changing their views….especially Morgan in this episode (if he did kill the wolf with his stick) we find him struggling to NOT kill anyone….and we find Carol struggling emotionally with the fact that killing is her only option at this point.

    • Joseph Campbell

That was a great scene! Also, what was up with the blue bag Morgan was carrying at the end?

      • Andiamo

Yes! I forgot about the bag. I have no guesses. I’m also wondering whose house that was that Morgan and the Wolf were in.

  • S_Carl_Dixon

Melissa McBride btw killed it as Carol in this Episode….fingers
crossed she submits this episode for an emmy nomination and WINS!! xD

  • S_Carl_Dixon

Rob sounded really sick in this podcast…..Hope you’re feeling much better now~

    • It was just a long weekend with going up to SF the day before.

  • TrentC

Love the season and your recap guys. This episode was non stop carnage from beginning to end, what a pace.

I may have misheard, but you were talking about the buzzer going off at the end of the show and you said it Carol cooking a casserole? It was actually Carl baking a cake. I saw it as you did. The entire attack happened start to finish in the time it took to bake a cake. And when it was over, veteran killer Carl just went back to the kitchen like nothing untoward had happened.

I believe that Enid has either met or knows about the Wolves, because of her statement you mentioned and her seemingly passive attitude when all hell was breaking loose.

The opening 10 seconds of episode two was masterful when Enid was keeping watch while her parents were trying to figure out which fuse to put in. Quick cut to Enid trapped inside the car while her folks were becoming brain buffets.

  • S_Carl_Dixon

I’m surprised none of our main characters died this episode: Even Ron and Father Gabriel Survived…with so many corpses being slashed, and no deaths in the Season premiere…I thought they’d save it for this episode! Guess I was wrong.

Do you guys think that they are actually playing mind games with us and that nobody is actually going to die this first half of the season? Or are the deaths coming next episode where we least expect it? Assuming that next episode the herd of walkers are marching towards Alexandria….somebody’s gotta die, right?

  • Darby27

There are so many things that pointing towards Enid being a wolf. The sneaking out, possession of Alexandria’s keys, and she clearly said “This place is too big to protect. There are too many blind spots. That’s how we were able to…” Could she have possibly initially come to kill Carl, rather than say goodbye?

  • Darby27

There are so many things pointing to Enid actually being a Wolf. She sneaks out over the walls, she apparently stole the keys from the local janitor, and she
said, “This place is too big to protect. There are too many blind spots. That’s how we were able to…” Any chance she was thinking about killing Carl until she saw assault riffle in his hands?

    • S_Carl_Dixon

I don’t think Enid is a Wolf….I’d assume she’d be more messed up in the head and crazy insane like most of the wolves are…she’s a little bit too quiet and insecure to be one of them….if she had stumbled upon the wolves she’d probably be the one they butchered…xD

But anything could happen….who knows…she might turn out to be the BIG Bad of the season….she might even be the reason why the wolves exist….their leader….LOL…imagine if that was the big twist?!! 😛 I wouldn’t be surprised…..

  • Ejay18

i was looking forward to having Morgan in the show but i found myself really annoyed with Morgan. I guess because of how little we know about what happened to him, it’s very hard to empathize or atleast understand where he is coming from. I understand not wanting to kill people, but does it really make sense to not kill the wolves? what do you think Morgan’s plan is for them?!
