The Walking Dead | Season 8, Episode 13 Recap – “Do Not Send Us Astray”

Rob Cesternino & Jessica Liese recap the “Do Not Send Us Astray”, Season 8, Episode 13 of “The Walking Dead”

  • Matthew Murphy

I like that this episode showed the zombies as a threat for the first time in a long time, but this episodes had more plot holes and mistakes than TLJ. The door to the mansion is just left open? Who does that? No one hears a walker fall down the stairs? There’s a film theory episode on Youtube that says the biggest threat in the ZA is everyone going deaf from firing guns all the time, I guess that’s true. I actually laughed outloud when Simon did the whistling and then got shot at like jackass. I’m not even going to get started on Carl’s jr with the rifle, hope that’s it for him.
Also if Tara lives, we riot. That would be Tarable.

    • Pink Pearl

…yeah, that hearing thing is discussed at length in the very podcast episode on which you are commenting.

      • Matthew Murphy

Yeah but I don’t get as much sarcasm unless I bring it up in the comments. 🙂

        • Pink Pearl

Hey, at least you understand you’re gonna get sassed about it! 🙂

    • TrentC

The whole big loud speech Simon gave on last week’s episode about staying true to Neganism and mentioning he could still be alive, seemed to me like a CYA moment…just in case Negan was listening.

And you get the fan made trophy from the comment section for using Tarable.

      • Matthew Murphy

Yeah it’s possible. I love Simon, one of them best show creations in a long time. I go in to each episode assuming it’ll be his last. They must be saving him for the finale or penultimate episode. Of course now that I’ve said that they’ll probably kill him next week.

        • TrentC

It was a strange shift. Simon seemed to be probing the waters with Dwight about a possible leadership change, then when everybody had gathered he launched into the Stay Negan speech. Real loud…

In keeping with the subject matter about hearing, I haven’t listening to the podcast yet…yuk yuk. Diving in now.

Agreed on Simon. And a hopeful prediction – We see Negan explain his origin story to Jadis.

Jessica and Rob probably went through this already. Is Father Gabriel walker-infected or normal-infected? If he has the walker disease, he sure has lived a long time comparatively.

          • Matthew Murphy

I’m about to get to the podcast, if I can find it on the attriocuous Apple podcast app which they’ve completely butchered in the last update.

          • Pink Pearl

It seems like everyone on The Talking Dead this season believes he has the walker disease, but I don’t think that’s how the walker disease works! The rules are so inconsistent! I don’t even know anymore. I guess we have to wait and see how he goes out. (Because i imagine he DOES go out before the end of the season.)

          • TrentC

Agreed. Seems like they’re playing fast and hard with the rules at times. You made me think of something. What happens if someone does get a regular disease that mimics the effects of turning? Pasty looking, sweating, weak…I feel that way after too much pizza. #keephenryaway

          • Pink Pearl

We SORT of had that happen in the prison when everyone got the swine flu…

          • TrentC

Oh yeahhh! That’s when Carol did her evil Florence Nightingale turn. One of those times where I thought the writing was great.

    • Andiamo

I’m sick of Tara too, but I think Jess is right. Dwight shot her and I doubt he dipped his arrows in guts. The best we can hope for is they kill her or she kills herself because they think she’ll get sick, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. (bonus points for Tarable 🙂

      • TrentC

They all gather round Tara in a sad scene, telling her they will miss her. She screams – But I’m not infected! Young Henry reassures her that he will do the necessary thing when it’s time…as he smiles and hides his pointy bloody stick behind his back.

        • Andiamo

…Henry can’t wait and gets stabby too soon. Seconds later Gabriel runs in and tells them that he had the fever, and Dr. Carter saved his life with antibiotics. Oops! Then they all look at each other and shrug while the laugh track plays.

          • TrentC

then they all say the series catch phrase in unison – Oh that darn Henry!

  • TrentC

    Tobin visibility spike/boot episode.

    🙁

    • Pink Pearl

I’m suddenly picturing Henry and Gregory as an animated series with a sort of Bill Watterson aesthetic.

  • Matthew P

“stupid boat show” has a 8.9 on IMDB, is it really THAT bad? I know the thing with the guide/DVR was annoying but is it really the “shows” fault? be mad at amc not the “stupid boat show”

    • Pink Pearl

I’m definitely mad at AMC, which is why I’m not going to watch their stupid boat show.

    • Bry_Lander

Whether the TV show is actually good or not isn’t the point, it is the fact that AMC pulled a cheap stunt to try to manipulate everyone to watch it. Why is that necessary if you have a good product?

      • Matthew P

Ok but whatever stupid decision AMC made is not the fault of the actors, workers, writers or creative minds behind that show which is actually pretty good. The fact you are so jaded as to dismiss entirely a show because a bunch of old men in a board room or marketing department somewhere at the top of the company made a stupid decision is just a little i dunno.. Just a little strange.

        • Bry_Lander

It is not being jaded to voice your disproval about being manipulated. Otherwise, it will keep happening, right?

    • Snuffeldjuret

While I loved the rant about the stupid boat show, I actually liked the boat show :).

  • Just Joe

I would’ve tried watching “The Terror” if the theme song was, Welcome to my “boat show” I think you’re gonna like it, I think you’re gonna feel you belong.

  • Bry_Lander

    A few thoughts and questions:

•I love how the medical woman chastises Saddiq for his inexperience at the beginning of the show. Uh, the country doesn’t exactly have a functioning medical education system during the zombie apocalypse, maybe you should just accept whatever help is available and shut up.

•Simon and his group fell for the ole’ “shhhh, let’s turn all the lights off in the building and ambush them” trick

•Rick flies onto the scene in the battle, apparently with 2-3 bullets in his weapon, as he tosses it 5 seconds into the action.

•Has anyone ever considered disabling the Savior’s escape vehicles so they can’t just take off at the end?

•I liked the discussion between Tara and Daryl about Merle, I really miss that guy. It also highlighted Tara’s hypocrisy regarding Dwight’s loyalty/disloyalty , which she acknowledged, and I think that made her more likeable.

•In settlement medical infirmaries, don’t you have some sort of safety protocol in case some of them die so that they don’t turn undetected and walk around eating people?

•Henry – why unlock the pen to threaten the Savior prisoners when it was made of wire that you could easily shoot through? Silly boy.

  • Lance Davis

AMC couldn’t go back to the good ol’ fashion “dumpster trick” this time, so they had tried to be clever + bamboozle the audience, and pull the fake-out through our DVR Guides + Recording scheduling features! They sure are some crafty SoB’s I will give them that. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/a1ceb05f0c9230523cc1272ff5b001bb4fd15d753d5cc8aa6d948d912c871c91.gif

    • Matthew Murphy

Always More Commericials is always looking for ways to trick loyal viewers.

  • Andiamo

TWD koan: If a walker falls down a staircase and no one hears him, does he really make a sound?

I know Rob hates this, but I’m saying it anyway, Maggie is a better leader than Rick. And it’s not because 12 people told her so this episode.

    1) She made a multi-stage tactical plan that actually worked. (When’s the last time Rick did that?)
    2) People respect her enough to follow the plan and not go off on their own to do stupid things and ruin the plan (Except for Henry, but the kid’s a moron, and except for Rick, because Rick is Rick.)

They went a little overboard showing Maggie as the thoughtful, self reflective leader, but it’s refreshing compared to how annoying Rick’s short sighted impulsiveness is at this point. I don’t think Maggie is good just because Gregory was so bad. I think she’s actually pretty good. Really, what’s so bad about her?

    • TrentC

Good description on the multi-stage tactical plan and agreed. Maggie planned phases of the battle and Rick plans – Imma kill him now, brb.

    • TrentC

Hey you, quick aside to say that I’m enjoying Counterpart quite a bit. Thanks for the recommendation.

      • Andiamo

Oh good. Thought you might like it. I’m surprised it isn’t getting more attention, but they did get a second season.

        • TrentC

The Sheena Easton girl is you, right?

          *Baldwin, the assassin

No spoilers, I’m only on episode 5!

          • Andiamo

Ssshhh. I don’t want anyone to know I’m famous… You know, when I was working as a photographer I usually wore all black and tried to be stealthy, and people would come up to me all the time and say I looked like a photo ninja, photo assassin, or like the Photographer with the Dragon Tattoo or some such nickname. I shoot with a camera instead of a gun, but other than that we’re identical 😉

          • TrentC

Oh great now you write interesting posts and are hot. Confuse me much?

Since you’ve seen my real FB pic, please don’t disclose that I look like Chris, the (male) model.

            regards,
            hairboy

          • Andiamo

lol. If you want to imagine that I am Baldwin when I post, I have no problem with that. Your confusion brings me joy for some reason 😉

I won’t tell, but Chris should be so lucky. You’re much better looking, plus you have the added bonus of not having a punchable face. Happy bunny day Mr. Winchester.

          • TrentC

            *blushes*

You’re just being kind because I’m currently going through the meat grinder in a Survivor thread.

We had better add some thread content…tonight will we get a Negan backstory? Without knowing I’m getting the sense we’ll be treated to that this season.

And happy bunny day/Easter to you too. I’m all alone here feeling sorry for myself so there’s no candies or chocolate bunnies, and I do love me some chocolate.

Oh well can’t complain. I bought a cheesecake sampler with 12 pieces, varying flavors. I killed six pieces in one sitting last night. Hey, hey, hey!

            see ya around Baldwin

          • Andiamo

I’m hoping for a Jadis/Negan story and an answer to what the hell those heaps are covering. Negan backstory would be nice. (My theory is Georgie may have been the one in the helicopter that Rick saw after making a crazy deal with Jadis, but I doubt we’ll get that info.)

I’m visiting friends for a few days, and this group of lapsed jews and atheists had dim sum for the holiday. No chocolate bunnies either, but I also can’t complain since I stuffed myself on pork buns and wouldn’t have room for even a rabbit ear.

I’ve vowed to try to stay out of the nonsense this season (try being the operative word), but if you ever need a fairly scrawny back up, you know I’m on your side.

          • TrentC

We got a little backstory last night. Not sure if I want to have my sacred memory associated with a piece of sports equipment for eternity though.

I used to work in a diverse environment with people who came from all over the world. I was the veteran and used to make jokes saying – If you don’t celebrate a particular holiday, you don’t get the time off work. Almost had a lovely 62 yr old man (we became good friends) come in during the Christmas break one year so that stopped in a hurry.

Stay out of the nonsense, it’s a good practice.

And Jadis was rocking a pair of jeans last night and spoke in complete sentences. There may be hope..

  • Bry_Lander

I have a question for Jessica, since she is the one with comic book expertise!

When Carol was wrestling with Walker Tobin, it appeared for a moment that she was sort of hesitating and was about to allow him to bite her. Did I imagine this? Was it some sort of nod to the fate of Carol in the comics? Thanks!

(I actually think this would have been an amazing end for the character and would have taken a tremendous amount of courage by the writers, while absolutely shocking and appalling the TV fans “Oh good, you do like me!”)

    • Andiamo

I got that feeling too, I thought Carol might just let him bite her. I was silent screaming “What are you doing?”

I have to disagree that it would’ve been a good end for Carol though. Shocking yes, but good, no. To be taken out by Tobin? That guy is as bland as they come. Plus he only liked the Suzy Homemaker mask Carol was wearing. He doesn’t know her like we do. Carol deserves a much better end.

      • Bry_Lander

If things happened exactly like the comic I would consider it a suicide by walker rather than being taken out by Tobin. It would be a creative and memorable way for Carol to die, instead of just getting shot or randomly bitten at some inevitable point.

    • Pink Pearl

Whoa, that would have caused riots. Like, full-on pitchfork riots. Although I could see where it’d be an interesting and ballsy choice. The writers would have had to handle that final conversation the two of them had with a slightly heavier hand in order for it to work, I think, but i guess it COULD have…

(Incidentally, I thought Comic Carol was one of the worst characters Kirkman ever came up with. She undergoes precisely no character development and dies in this deeply weird way because she has a sad about the fact that nobody wants to bang her? UGHHHHH. Show Carol rules, Comic Carol drools.)

      • Bry_Lander

I do love TV Carol, she has given us some great moments, but what else is there to really do with that character? I’m always an advocate of mirroring the comic as much as possible, and if she would have went out like Comic Carol that would have been spectacular.

  • Michael Newton

I found it strange that you guys didn’t realize Tara was shot by Dwight, Simon was about to kill her so Dwight took the shot to save her. It happened quickly but it wasn’t exactly a blink and you’d miss it thing either..

    • Jonathan Purves

Yeah I noticed the same thing, which is why Tera and Daryl were talking about it because she realised Dwight had just saved her from getting shot.

On the podcast they’re saying “I wonder if this storyline will go to Tera”, yes it did we saw it! 🙂

    • Pink Pearl

In our defense, a) that scene was very dark, b) that scene moves fast, and c) we record the podcast 10 minutes after the episode airs. We SUSPECTED that was what was happening but I watched it as many times as I could before I had to get on the podcast and I still wasn’t sure until they confirmed it on TTD (which I couldn’t have seen before we recorded because again, stupid boat show).

  • Lance Davis

AMC couldn’t get away with going back to the good ol’ fashion “dumpster
trick” this time via the show, so they tried to be clever + bamboozle

  • Emmy Snow

Ben getting killed was the second half of season 7. I think it was actually 7×13 so exactly one season ago.

  • Jimmy B

The stupid Boat Show is getting rave reviews and is based on a popular book. I haven’t seen it, I don’t have access to the channel showing it in the UK. Dwight shot Tara with an arrow that wasn’t dipped in guts so I assume this is how they will discover he is legit. Unless the show is evil/genius (depending on your point of view) and kills her off beforehand. They have to find out soon, though, right?

  • Isaiah Dustin Parter

Instead of watching the terror, my family and I decided to watch season 7 episode 1 of Game of Thrones because we are in the middle of catching up, so it all worked out for the best for us.

  • TP222

I loathe the show so much now, I hope someone just nukes the world (in the show) so the show ends.
