The Walking Dead | Season 8 Finale Recap – “Wrath”

Rob Cesternino & Jessica Liese recap “Wrath”, Season 8 Finale of “The Walking Dead”

  • TrentC

Overall the season was alright. I didn’t care for two things during the finale.

The two iconic leaders Rick and Negan end up having their last showdown, and the fight comes down to a piece of glass hanging from a random tree. In a season that featured showers of bullets in some episodes, it seemed derivative to me that these two powerhouse characters would once again end up doing the hand to hand thing for the culmination of their relationship. Even hatchet vs bat would have seemed more plausible.

The scene featuring Evil Maggie, Jesus and Daryl saying that they’ll wait and Rick will get his one day. Other than Michonne, I can’t think of three characters who would be more likely NOT to say that. Daryl had just let Dwight go and Jesus professed for the entire season not to kill Saviors. Maggie, while understandably being distraught over Negan killing Glenn and not agreeing with Rick’s decision, implies that she’ll be the force that opposes him and may do whatever is necessary to stop Rick?

I’ve enjoyed the podcast coverage all season long with Jessica and Rob, thanks.

P.s. The Oceanside Gals showed up and no sign of Aaron. What happened to Aaron?

    • J-me not Hi-me

Aaron was there, they showed him for a split second.

And as for Maggie, I thought her plan was more about taking Negan out as opposed to Rick. Daryl being down with that plan was logical but it DEFINITELY made no sense that Jesus would be pro-killing suddenly.

      • TrentC

Thanks. I must have got lost in the translation. I thought Maggie was talking about doing something to Rick. Maybe I missed the entire thrust of the scene if all three of them were talking about doing something to Negan, rather than Rick.

Makes me think. If they have Negan restrained somewhere under guard, it would be relatively easy to get near him and take him out no?

Haven’t we gone to that well too many times? Rick makes a call and people don’t like it.

        • Adam Bradford

I got the same vibe you did from Maggie, that she may actually wish to do harm to Rick and Michonne…which as you pointed out, really makes no sense. The only thing that makes any sense is Maggie wanting Negan dead, but she should still be wanting to work with Rick/Michonne. So what are they going to do, just devise a plan to sneak in and assassinate Negan? That seems like it would be pretty uneventful. What’s more is that it’d most likely be very able to assassinate Negan and Rick/Michonne are not likely to get too pissed off if they were to assassinate Negan so the stakes are very low.

Btw, is Michonne guilty by association? When Negan was lying on the ground, choking on his own blood, she was really only consoling Maggie when she broke into hysterics. It’s not like Daryl, Jesus, or anyone stepped up to kill Negan. Did Maggie find out that Michonne “delivered” Carl’s letter to Negan and just assumes she really wants Negan alive?

          • TrentC

Good point on the added Michonne hate from Maggie. I didn’t see where Michonne did anything horrible other than hold/hug Maggie when Rick said to go help Negan. They didn’t know at that point if Negan would even make it.

Also agree on the uneventful fallout from someone killing Negan at a later date. It has to be pretty minimal if it happens. I can’t see anyone saying – “Oh no, Negan is dead. Our new world is going to fail now because someone decided to exact vengeance on the sociopath who used to kill people with a bat.”

        • Bruce Pierce

Sounds like trying to overthrow Rick to me. We’re going to get lots more Negan yet.

          • Adam Bradford

It does. But beyond the Negan dead/ailve debate, Rich and Maggie seem to agree on everything else. By attempting to kill Negan, is Maggie going to turn into what she hates the most…Negan?

      • XmanIce

I just typed basically the same thing. Maybe I’ll start reading the comments first from now on, lol

    • Bruce Pierce

      Rick is a terrible shot.

      • Bruce Pierce

And he never seems to have any extra bullets to reload after he empties his gun missing everything he shoots at.

      • TrentC

One would think a state trooper/cop who has a couple subsequent years of experience nailing zombies with headshots could take out Negan from a distance.

        Stormtrooper Rick.

  • 2dog

I enjoyed Walking Dead this year, Fear Walking Dead has been so bad in the past I really enjoy the show last night and have hopes it might be good this year?
Maggie Jesus really REALLY hmmmm, Jesus who we really didn’t see this season but to tell Morgan in the last show how not to kill?????????? I’m lost with this??????

    • Adam Bradford

Season 3 of Fear was pretty good and I thought the premiere of S4 was terrific.

      • Bruce Pierce

It was better last year, first two years not so much.

        • XmanIce

Last year was pretty good. I quit watching the series then came back at some point last season.

        • Adam Bradford

Yeah, S1 was tolerable, S2 was borderline unwatchable.

  • Cody Wilson

I was under the impression that the map the decoy group of saviors had was a replica of the false map Dwight sent to rick, not another version of the map. With it being the same that would further confirm rick’s belief that the original map sent by dwight was legit

  • Bruce Pierce

The Rick and Carl walking down the road scene looked like the Andy Griffith show to me.

    • Morty

I had that exact same thought! All they needed was the whistling.

  • TrentC

Rick and his gang of _ricks did make me laugh outloud.

  • WHATROBWILLNOTSAY

Fear spoiler – Morgan’s journey to LA was very early Survivor Probst traveling from Final Tribal to the Finale.
Like CBS, AMC didn’t have the courage to see it through.

  • WHATROBWILLNOTSAY

    Very strong M*A*S*H reference Jessica.

  • XmanIce

In the podcast Rob and Jess said Maggie, Daryl, and Jesus are plotting to kill Rick and Michone. I took their meeting to mean they plan to kill Negan, not Rick and Michone. I think it fits the story why Maggie and Daryl want Negan dead, but Jesus being in on it doesn’t make any sense. He never wants to kill anyone.
Again, I’ll be glad when Michone is a badass again or gets a storyline at least. I was disappointed with her role this season.

    • Adam Bradford

Something tells me that with Danai Gurira’s success in Black Panther, Michonne is not much for this world.

      • XmanIce

I can’t bare the thought of that!

  • TrentC

I have to say I’ve been pulling for Eugene in the background all season long. It seemed to me our esteemed podcast hosts had written him off for a bad guy last week. Now, it appears they knew Eugene would come through. I gotta start listening to these things with both ears.

  • Charles Bikle

I predict that Ann B. Jadis will wind up freeing Negan from his cell.
