Mr. Robot Revisited | Season 1 Episode 6 Recap

Listen to the Podcast

Hello, friend! Welcome to the Mr. Robot podcast on Post Show Recaps. Josh Wigler (@roundhoward) and Antonio Mazzaro (@acmazzaro) are re-watching and discussing a new episode of Mr. Robot season one every week, leading up to the season two premiere on July 13. The podcast contains two separate spoiler-free and spoiler-filled sections. Please do not post spoilers in the comments section.

This week, Josh and Antonio discuss the sixth episode of the series, in which all of the awful things happen. No, seriously, it gets very dark as Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) finds himself in a “fight or flight” situation, forced to play along with the vicious drug lord Fernando Vera (Elliot Villar) in his quest to break out of prison. Spoiler Alert: It does not go well.

Send your questions in for the podcast through our feedback form. Next week’s podcast focuses on episode three of the series.

WARNING: The spoiler section of the podcast begins at the 1:03:11 mark.

Shayla’s death really got me when I was watching this show the first time (second time too I’m not gonna lie), Maybe this speaks to me and my bad relationship choices, but the weird guy and the attractive, kind hearted drug dealer really spoke to me. I was falling in TV love with Shayla right along with Elliot. I held out hope the entire time Elliot was crying next to her lifeless corpse hoping she’s just they’d zoom in and she’d wake up. NOPE! They panned to her and she was so very very dead. RIP Shayla.

I love the podcast and you guys have me seeing things I didn’t consider the first time I watched it. One thing that I’ve been trying to make sense of has been the camera angles of the characters, particularly when the close-ups are panned to the left or right of screen. I can’t tell if it is intentional as part of the story or autuerism. Can you guys give your thoughts on the camera angles on a future spoiler? Thanks.

Is there a time table for the rest of season 1?

Josh, I completely understand where you are coming from. Shayla’s death could be perceived as a mere trope, but I agree with Antonio’s assessments. We all know that Elliot struggles with emotional connections, and I feel like Shayla could be considered more of a friend, than a lover . This whole episode was just another reminder to Elliot that his actions can be devastating to the people around him.
