Kind of surprised you guys didn’t like this show more. I’m no Reese Witherspoon fan, but I thought this show was pretty fast paced with lots of funny sketches.

    • MCBAR

it was better than last weeks, she had great energy and the sketches were more colorful. the monologue was pretty cool and u can see how much effort the crew put in.

      • Charles Bikle

I think a big part of that is because everyone’s mother was there; I think that got everyone to bring their “A” game.

        • Yeah, I guess I wasn’t feeling it as much as you guys. Still, some fun stuff.

I liked “Be Scene In LA” – I think the premise was two mature, self-absorbed trophy wives try to do a talk show with personnel who don’t yet know how to operate the sophisticated equipment – I dunno, it worked for me.

    • if it worked for you, that’s all that matters!

      • Charles Bikle

Although, you guys are probably right about how they could have used the premise to do more than bathroom humor. Maybe in the future if this sketch returns.

I liked the water slide sketch but I agree with Rich – I think it was supposed to be longer, but stuff got cut.

I remember reading how the sketches with elaborate sets usually never get cut because of the expense and I’ll bet there was more effort put into that set, if for no other reason, than out of safety concerns about extras sliding down it.

    • HA! You’re probably right, that was pretty complicated!

      • Charles Bikle

Maybe that’s part of the reason why game show sketches never seem to get cut – because of the involved set design & graphics.

Do they usually have a big mother days episode I would think that if most of the mothers came and they showed the videos… That they would have more sketches about mothers. I think the best mother day episode was five years ago with Betty white as host

    • I feel like select mom’s have come on before, but that’s the biggest overall showing I can remember.

Even though she didn’t mention her most recent movie in the promos they brought up “wild” a couple of times as that did a lot better I thought that’s why she was hosting

  • Kenan is returning for 41!
(Thanks to Luis for the heads up on this link)

    • JDS posted this on twitter this morning.
Normally, I would say it was just “in the zeitgeist”, and i’m not surprised that two comedy writers both thought of this idea. There are a few points that make it oddly similar beyond the premise, though…

      • Mike Bloom

This hasn’t been the best season for plagiarism accusations on this show. SNL is 2 for 2 now, between this week and the Sarah Silverman episode.

        • agreed. Although the more i think about the two sketches, the more i think how, if another writer gave me that brilliant premise and asked me to come up with beats, I’d probably come up with those beats as well. So I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt on this one!

  • Anna

Very surprised Jon Hamm isn’t hosting this season, considering #TheEndOfAnEra. Would’ve liked to see him rather than Louis C.K

    • Yes, said the same thing on the podcast. Was very dissapointed. Hope we see him in a cameo on Saturday night!

  • Jason Lee

Rich, you’re actually not too far off on the origins of the name Florence + the Machine! The keyboardist for the band, Isabella Summers, was nicknamed “Machine” and she and Florence used to perform as a duo under the cumbersome name “Florence Robot/Isa Machine” before shortening their name and adding a full band.

  • Ben

I know I’m way late on this but you guys said they never did the “Southern Wives” sketch before…but didn’t they do it with Melissa McCarthy once? And then at the end she jumped through a window or something???

    • Sort of. They did a sketch about women doing vision boards or something. In that sketch, all the women were “normal” except for MM’s character, who wanted to avenge the death of her father. A funny sketch to be sure, but I don’t know if I would say it was related to this one.
