The Walking Dead | Season 9, Episode 7 Recap: “Stradivarius”

Rob Cesternino and Jessica Liese recap season 9, episode 7 of The Walking Dead entitled “Stradivarius”

  • Morty

This teenage Henry isn’t that bad. He’s not my favorite by any means, but I would take him over annoying Coral any day. (Of course, that could be more due to Chandler Riggs)

    • TrentC

      Gotta say Coral>Henry for me.

Henry always seems to have an angry little angsty look on his face. Disagreeing with Jess, there were exactly two things I was interested in when I became a teenager and blacksmithing was not one of them. It’s far too altruistic for the character and mark my words…Henry is going to be a problem moving forward if they let him near an anvil. I feel bad for the horses already.

      • Morty

Well, his career options are a hell of a lot more limited than ours were. Plus, he’s been fixing things at The Kingdom apparently, and he can use those skills to make badass weaponry. So, seems as reasonable as anything else on this show to me.

        • TrentC

I’m down with it being reasonable, just that I think the character of Henry is using it as some sort of smokescreen for something else. The weaponry may be part of it, as in he’s getting tired of the staff and wants to move up to swords.

      • Pink Pearl

Well, sure, in our world you don’t get too many would-be teenage blacksmiths, but things would be different if zombies knocked us back into 19th-century technology. I think for Henry it’s probably a combination of good old-fashioned teenage rebellion (i.e., “I don’t want your life, Dad!”) and feeling like he wants to define his role in the world. Trust me, if we proceed anything like we do in the comics, and he continues to get Carl’s storyline from there, he’ll still be PLENTY teenagery.

        • TrentC

I was initially going to make a comment about how Henry is probably getting a little pervy and just wanted to catch Maggie in the bathtub. And then J-me not Hi-me mentioned that Henry may be more interested in Enid than blacksmithing.

The way they’ve crafted the character makes me think he’s up to something, testament to the show. I’d like to think Henry wants to do the right thing.

  • Matthew Murphy

Just to make things easier, so we don’t confuse the Ricks it’s probably best just to call Rick Jr. Big Hoss from now on.

    • TrentC

I liked Daryl’s comment – We never found a body.

After a guy shot a large pile of dynamite 20 feet away from him that took out an entire bridge.

Dude, you may not want to find that particular body..

      • Matthew Murphy

Yeah but Daryl knows he has plot armour. :p

        • TrentC

Rick is his bro, I suppose Daryl knows when there’s a disturbance in the force.

With Daryl still searching this tells us one important thing the writers can’t deke around now. That Rick never made it back since he disappeared.

I’m thinking of the movies and how they could have left that avenue open. Rick somehow came back after a couple of years and got killed/leaves again (maybe why Michonne is so grumpy).

  • Just Joe

Just announced, a ten part series staring Gwyneth Paltrow that reveals Goop was the cause of the zombie apocalypse

  • TrentC

Rob – I don’t want to have you know, premature speculation…

Jessica – It would be okay Rob, it happens to lots of guys.

Good gravy that was good. Made me forget about my episode comments.

  • TrentC

I don’t understand why Luke wouldn’t say he’s looking at a violin or just turn around and show Michonne.

And Henry is going to intern without getting paid? I don’t buy it. I think he’s got another plan up his sleeve.

I’m finding the ‘secret’ regarding why Hilltop and Alexandria don’t
communicate anymore a little ponderous already. Maggie mystery, Rick mystery, X’s on our backs mystery, We don’t want to get along mystery, Daryl’s dog’s name mystery…issa lot!

What do we think about slingshots? Good zombie apocalypse weapons?

And I have worse shirts than Bernie.

    • Morty

I actually call my dog Dog half the time. I wasn’t wild about the name he came with, but I use some variation or another of it the other half the time. He answers to both.

      • TrentC

And that’s why he looks up at you with that C’mon man! look when you call him Dog. He knows you can do better.

        • Morty

          He seems O-K with it!

          • TrentC

Yeah but when he’s talking to his dog buddies they give him a hard time.

          • Morty

No telling what he tells them about those times when I call him Dummy.

          • TrentC

So, why was the dog tied up in that scene when the walkers were attacking? Seemed like a precarious situation for the dog.

          • Morty

He got caught in one of Daryl’s snare traps. Daryl even mumbles to Henry later that it was the first time it had happened.

          • TrentC

            Missed the mumble, thanks lol!

        • Bry_Lander

It seems like Daryl could have come up with a better name for his dog during all of those hours he spends sitting alone fireside, sulkily cooking roadkill quality food.

          • TrentC

I guess the dog is lucky. He could have been called mmmmrphhhmm

          • Andiamo

This could be part of the Daryl doesn’t want to connect with anything too much story he has going. Just a little psychological separation trick. He could handle losing Dog, but Fluffy, no way. (Ok Fluffy probably wouldn’t be Daryl’s first choice of names.)

    • J-me not Hi-me

I think Henry’s other plan has already been made clear: he wanted to be near Enid, as the only female we’ve seen who’s remotely near his age.

      • TrentC

Not so clear to me, thanks!

  • Wendy B

the walking dead is dead to me bUT your podcast is great thank you

  • TrentC

Jessica? Are you able to post your recipe for chocolate brownie pecan pie? No worries at all if you can’t.

Oh and you made pumpkin custard cheesecake with a ginger snap crust? Your hubby is a lucky man.

    • Pink Pearl

Here you go! I’ve made it several years in a row and it’s a big hit with everyone. https://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/chocolate-pecan-pie-with-bourbon

      • TrentC

Thank you. I’m not much of a cook but I’ve been told my oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are to die for. (wait…that may not exactly be a compliment)

3 tablespoons bourbon? I used to be a big drinker and wonder if normal whiskey would suffice?

I’ll figure it out and thanks again 🙂

        • Pink Pearl

It totally would, in my opinion!

          • TrentC

            3 cups…of whiskey. Oopsy.

And then I can call it my Walking Dead pie lol!

  • Matthew Murphy

I’m loving Rob’s Scotty Gimple impression.

  • Andiamo

Jessica, you’re right. C. Thomas Howell was the hilltop messenger. The minute I saw him I said “Ponyboy” in my head.

They really did Lauren Cohan dirty. First they don’t pay her enough (while Daryl gets about $100,000 per mumble), then they write her off with no fanfare. To add insult to injury they made her tape a goodbye message for Andrew Lincoln’s cryfest while she doesn’t get even one tear from Chris Hardwick. Not cool.

That new guy in Magna’s group is gonna freak out when he sees the album collection at Hilltop.

Henry is annoying, but like Miley Cyrus post-Hannah Montana, constantly trying to prove you’re not a child makes you do stupid things.

    • TrentC

I think there may be more behind Lauren Cohan’s departure than we’ve heard. It reminds me of when Cliff Curtis left FTWD through a clunky bit of writing on episode two.

Between Carl, Rick and now Maggie’s dodgy exits from the show, it makes one think that there may be issues between production and the talent. As Rob said, they’re hemorrhaging ratings and can’t afford to keep losing the iconic faces of the series. In my view Cohan is a great actress and the character of Maggie is/was one of the best on the show.

      • J-me not Hi-me

Oooh, was there a story about why Cliff Curtis left? Because his departure was bizarre.

        • TrentC

No unfortunately I don’t have any juicy gossip 🙁

I did however watch him on The Talking Dead and sometimes you can tell things from what people don’t say. Curtis seemed edgy and whenever his departure from the show was mentioned and Hardwick gushed about how great he was, you could tell the actor had something to say and wanted to. It felt like his departure was still a total surprise to him and he kinda stumbled over responses when it came to questions like – How did it feel when you first read the script? Did you know you were leaving the show?

      • Andiamo

Yea maybe they all hate Scott Gimple as much as we do. I don’t know how they plan to tell the story of the rift between Michonne and Maggie without Maggie. Maybe they’ll wait out Lauren Cohen’s new show, like Rob and Jess said, and if it does well they’ll tell that part of the story in a movie? or a web series? or a video game or whatever the hell else Gimple was talking about.

        • TrentC

Did you like Rob’s Scott M. Gimple imitation? (where the M stands for Dr Mike lol!)

Yeah they’ve left the door open for Cohan and touching on what Rob and Jess said, it feels like there was a slight committed against her at the same time.

If Lauren Cohan never returns, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that she walked off the set at one point or in the least wasn’t happy and let it be known.

If we look at the flow of just the first six episodes this season we see Rick getting killed, then surviving. Almost simultaneously Maggie mysteriously and quietly rides off into the sunset while perhaps the largest exit story of any TWD character is happening?

I ain’t no writer and it still feels wrong…

          • aardvarkratnik

Yeah but Rick got a helicopter and the garbage chick, Maggie got nothing.

          • TrentC

            This is true.

  • J-me not Hi-me

The vibe I got was that Alexandria has isolated itself, but the Hilltop and the Kingdom were still in contact, if infrequently. There didn’t seem to be any drama at all when Carol and Daryl showed up, and the Hilltop is planning to participate in the festival.

    • Andiamo

I wonder if Michonne and Maggie are the only ones with conflict. Other Alexandrians didn’t seem as isolationist. (i.e. Sadiq got word that Maggie was gone, others wanted Magda’s group to stay, Aaron playfights with Jesus.) Michonne is holding onto something and the others seem to be going along with it out of respect for her.

  • Bry_Lander

    1) So the theory that Georgie owns the helicopter is dead, given that Maggie is with her group now.

    2) After all these seasons on the show and for such a pivotal character, they couldn’t have dedicated an episode to Maggie’s departure? Henry’s 2 episode journey to the Hilltop was more critical?

    3) I love how the weapons that Magna’s group was begging consisted of a bow and arrow but also a slingshot and a pickaxe type of thing. 8 years into the ZA and the most lethal weapon you aquire is ….a slingshot…

    4) What’s with the Rosita personality flip? She was always a stone-faced badass in past seasons, now she has incorporated the worst whimpering characteristics of Eugene and Gabrielle.

    5) So Aaron can sneak off and travel a full day to train with Jesus frequently without anyone noticing his absence?

    6) So Sadiq has a better network than Michonne? How does he find out that Maggie left and how does Michonne fail to know this – it isn’t like there is a 24 hour cable news cycle in the ZA to distract people, news of this significance would be widely discussed.

    • Pink Pearl

I don’t know, man, a pickaxe and slingshot are way more practical in the zombie apocalypse than a gun you have to continually reload with ammo. (I mean, in the absence of a Eugene and a munitions factory.)

      • Bry_Lander

The pickaxe I do get, the slingshot just doesn’t seem that reliably lethal (for non-Biblical people who aren’t named David at least). They went on and on about having their weapons taken away, so I was expecting that they would have something a little more intriguing, like maybe they scavenged a museum and took some cool medieval weaponry or something 🙂

        • TrentC

I’m still stuck on the fact people can insert knives anywhere into skulls without much effort. Degraded bone sure, but I’ve been in enough fights to know that skulls are tough and not like butter.
