The Walking Dead Season 8 Premiere Recap of “Mercy” from October 22, 2017

Rob Cesternino and Jessica Liese break down the beginning of Rick’s “All Out War” on Negan in the Season 8 premiere of “The Walking Dead”, “Mecry”

  • So okay here I go again………… that was so funny!!!! Really really great job guys. Jessica I love your sarcastic humor it was hilarious. Why is it this show prompts such hilarity in you Rob? Fear wasn’t nearly as prime for good humor so I’m glad it continues here. I’m really excited for the recaps of this show, even if I’m not as excited by the story line. Really, a whole season of fighting that guy? Hey btw, how about if Eugene takes over the Saviors? He’d be a leader Rick could work with. One thing I want to ask is if Jessica knows spoilers from the comic would she mind sharing those things in a “Spoiler” section at the end of the recap? I really wanted to know that explanation for why Rick was being flashed around in timelines. Thanks so much for the recap and getting it too us so quick!!

    • Thank you so much, Laura.

      • XmanIce

I was disappointed this episode didn’t involve the garbage people. I absolutely live for Rob’s rants about them! It really is the only reason I’m excited for this season.

    • Pink Pearl

Laura, Josh and I did a Walking Dead book club for Season 6b where we went deep into the comics. I don’t know when we’ll have time to do another one, but I think this season especially we’d have a lot to work with, so I could definitely see if he and I can carve out time.

      Thanks for your kind words!

      • I remember (but not really everything that was said I guess)! I was just thinking something small just for spoilers related to whatever was going on currently. Either way though appreciate all you do!

        • Pink Pearl

In the early seasons of Game of Thrones, before PSR was covering it, I used to listen to a GoT podcast that did this very thing, and I loved it. If Rob was also a comics guy, we’d def be putting something in there. I’m just not sure how we can work it into our coverage if it’s just me talking!

          • Maybe we can do this in the last section of the podcast – like the way we do it for Big Brother on RHAP

          • yes!

          • Pink Pearl

If you don’t mind me spoiling you!

    • sunny

agree with you Laura, these recaps are the only reason I’m sticking with the show. And judging from Rob & Jess’s comments, looks like we might get your suggested spoiler section!

    Rick: It’s ours, by right!
    Me: Calm down Stannis.

I can’t tell is covering one of Carl’s eyes makes him a worse or better actor. I was wondering if the director was laughing like the assistant gym teacher in Porky’s from behind the camera when filming the scene where he approaches the gas station.

Otherwise, the show is an incoherent mess.

Wasn’t Rick’s group decimated at the end of last season (and I watched the replay right before this premier) despite being saved by the Tiger?

    How much time has passed?

Wouldn’t Negan’s group have regrouped in force and come back to finish Rick’s group off (Negan seems to have alot of people who were not at the battle at the end of last season where Ricks seems to have a finite number of fighters).

Do they have enough bullets to justify shooting out all the glass panes? Was that the optimal strategy there?

I rewatched the alleged “Special Edition” of the episode in question right before watching the premiere and I don’t believe so. There were a few casualties in the gunfight, but no named characters other than Sasha, and the wiki says “at least three” deaths on the Rick/Hilltop/Kingdom side. Certainly I wouldn’t say decimated. I think the amount of time that’s passed is no more than a week, given that Michonne still hasn’t healed enough to participate. I think they mention near the beginning of the episode that they need to strike fast so Negan DOESN’T have time to regroup.

      • WHATROBWILLNOTSAY

        yeah.
i guess i thought alot more people would have been shot in a gun fight that close to enemy

        • Pink Pearl

A lot of things that logically SHOULD happen in real life tend to not happen in TWD universe.

          • WHATROBWILLNOTSAY

After the fight I would have put Ricks group at “hanging on” or “picking up the pieces”, not “ready to mount an assault”

    • TrentC

How much time has passed since the end of last season? According to Maggie’s Baby Bump Timer – Four minutes.

  • WHATROBWILLNOTSAY

I think TWD will be on long enough that we actually see a 65 year old Andrew Lincoln doing that scene

  • belinda

Maybe it’s something problematic with how they’ve framed things, but it seems rather frustrating for them to have this long ass talk with Neegan out in the open and everyone has a gun and a good shot at the guy and then proceeded to not shoot at him but at every window instead.

This includes Father whatshisname, he hears and then sees Neeagn trapped alongside with him in the trailer/box, and he is carrying an assault rifle of some sort, and Neegan’s the one making threats about poop? Like, SHOOT AT THE GUY, if not to kill him, at his legs or something, incapacitate the dude in some manner.

    • J-me not Hi-me

I’m okay with the waiting to shoot, since I thought they were waiting for the signal of the closest bomb going off to start making noise to attract the walker herd. I’m also okay with aiming the shots high, since the best case scenario seemed to be not killing anyone at the compound but Negan. Where they lose me is in concocting an elaborate plan that involved them herding walkers, because the last time they tried (the first half of season 6) things went wrong and they took massive casualties at Alexandria.

      • belinda

like I understand why the story wouldn’t want them to easily just shoot neegan and be done with it all, BUT, in that case, the show really needs be a bit better about the writing and not consistently put Neegan in positions where it seems positively idiotic that no one took a shot at him (or then have set someone with a sniper rifle, much like how they took out the watch people else where in that very same episode), when their goal is to, well, kill Neegan. Instead they waste hundreds or thousands of bullets on freaking windows. IDK, at least put neegan in a position where it looks like it’ll be difficult to get a shot on him or something, have his minions surroud him like body shield, whatever. I hate it when shows are this lazy when the solution is just repositioning a little bit in a scene, and just expect the audience to just go with it. And Father whatshisface had a freaking gun on him, there’s basically no reason not to kill Neegan, especially given he thinks he’s fucked either way anyway swarmed by zombies in the trailer. Why not shoot immediately upon knowing he was there, espeially since Neegan’s all threateny and stuff. LIke, freaking shoot him in some way, so he’d have trouble torturing you lol if his stomach’s bleeding or his thigh or whatnot. Like, if he reverts back to coward, he had ample reason to shoot the guy (so he doesn’t get tortured), and if he is now suddenly ‘imma gonna risk my life to save others’, then why wouldn’t he shoot this guy who’s been such a problem for alexandria?

  • TrentC

They don’t cover the tires on the cars with metal, they don’t shoot Negan and his lieutenants, and then they unload 1000 rounds into empty windows.

Are the writers from Fear the Walking Dead going to be the surprise crossover guests this season??

Agreeing with Rob and Jess 100%, thanks.

    • sunny

lol my bf doesn’t watch TWD so only sees bits in passing when I’m watching. He walked in the room last night, took things in for a minute and said “they didn’t cover the tires of the cars?”……then “why don’t they just shoot the guy?” then left the room again

      • TrentC

I really enjoy the show so it’s hard sometimes when you see a huge setpiece like they featured in the season opener. Big plan, big speech and all sorts of good feelings.

Then you see tires and wasted ammo and Negan doing his speech shtick once again, and nothing happens. D’oh!

I did like the three(?) phases of Rick, possibly showcasing different timelines. If that’s correct, then I suppose the bleary-eyed Rick timeline is going to be after a few people have died. Father Gabriel, step right up buddy…

        • Pink Pearl

Do we REALLY think there’s any universe in which Rick is utterly wrecked by the death of Father Gabriel of all people?

          • TrentC

Yes, because dead Father Gabriel will be on top of a pile of dead people that we care about.

Whoa that escalated to a dark place. I have this weird suspicion about two main players getting killed this season.

In other news, I wonder how Carl feels about Enid getting to ride with the big dawgs? You’d think he’d want to keep an eye out for her.

            (I had to, sorry)

  • Fernando Castro

Maggie implied she was pregnant in the Season 6 premiere during her whispers with Glenn. In the Season 8 premiere, she’s STILL not showing a belly bump? Therefore, in 2+ seasons, what’s the most time that could have passed in the Walking Dead world? At this rate, she’ll give birth in the Season 11 finale.

  • Paris

There were so many flaws in this episode… I don’t even know where to start

  • Charles Bikle
  • Megan

I literally haven’t started listening yet, but I really hope Rob and Jessica rip this premiere for its “just alright-ness.” Way too much hype for a lackluster episode 100.
